Richard at fb tuning or any other subaru specific mechanic would likely be able to find the fault.
it's a case of handing the car over to people that know what there doing.
​​​​​​ive used Richard on numerous occasions and he always sorts it.

Thanks Justin, I have every faith in Len at S4Y, just not entirely sure I'm going to like his diagnosis....


Could be the Samco inlet hose solves everything, if it does I'll eat my hat and crack the champagne open lol (matt black I have chosen)

Surprised tonight, engine oil lower than I realised, not too sure when I last checked it....could explain things. No way cooked anything as fans were coping in traffic. Took approx. 250 - 300ml tonight to get it back to max - level surface and warm not hot. About half way between min and max.....never had the oil so low on it before, not topped it up in ages as catch can seemed to stop oil consumption and PCV delete with catch can, so perhaps got complacent.


I'm confident the oil level was safe, but would compromise performance and cooling maybe.


Fingers crossed for my drive to work..........hmmm...I wonder....

Naaah, still the same, hope it's the inlet hose and or an exhaust manifold gasket.

New modines fitted at build 20k miles ago. Didn't see any leaks from there when I got my thermostat and coolant changed.....

How hot are we talking when you say it goes up and down depending on how you drive it.

The oil consumption could be related to the heating issue as the oil will try and take the heat out of the water via the modine. which in turn would make the oil run a little hotter and a bit more vapour float about in the crankcase.

The car running lean will compensate for the air to a certain extent depending on how big the leak is. if it reaches The highest % for correction then it would definitely put in a lean code.

I have seen similar issues before. the bottom hose would be cool ish after a run which indicated lack of proper circulation due to air ingress which was a cracked liner also didn't push much water out either, it would run perfect just sat idling. fans would cycle and the temps would adjust accordingly

I can get to traffic or temporary lights at 86 c, approx. 2 minutes later it'll be up to 96/97 and the fans cool accordingly, but then moving in lower gears it gets hotter and hotter until 97 then the fans comes in again.


I know this may sound normal, but it's like a sped up version of normal if that makes sense. The higher the RPM, the quicker the temps escalate, normal sounding....but it never used to be like that....temps also rise rapidly whilst idle revving....fans always cut in at 96 / 97 without fail.


Anything I can listen for with a cracked liner?

Good to see that my old PSi3 is still going...

Sorry to hear of your problems. My money is on a head gasket/cylinder block/liner issue. Have you carried out a sniff test to check for any exhaust gases in the cooling system.

The reason I ask this is that I had an issue with the BDG in my RS1800, which although had been rebuilt with a new block etc would lose water and run a bit hot but not overheat (with the fans on ). A sniff test showed exhaust gasses were in cooling system and my engine man reckoned it was due to the liners in the new block settling down a bit ( ! ). A new headgasket fixed the problem and it has been perfect since.

Yep, shame the rest of the car doesn't do as well as the PSi3 lol


Must admit I haven't tried a sniff test as seeing no bubbles anywhere, but yes worth a go.


I have one of those kits with the blue reagent liquid so will try that over the weekend....


As far as I know my block was skimmed and bores were honed / re-crosshatched, but I don't think new liners were fitted. Not pinned either.


Such is life, I'll get her sorted out. Just more ££££ !!!

Ahhh, except my blue fluid is now yellow after being open for over two years! Grrr
I'll have to get another bottle.


I'm sure I could hear sucking or hissing coming from somewhere near the inlet tube earlier on tickover...just can't pin it down. Very frustrating.
