Hinckley - Yes or No?
We only need one cold winter with a massive area of high pressure over Europe and the focus on building new plants, and maybe not shutting the others until they have been replaced, will probably occur. IMO.
It's quite possible that the project has stalled because of this...just whose nuclear plant is it? Be it now or in the future....
The conspiracy theorist in me suspects that with the costs involved and EDFs current financial affairs-having had bailout money from the French government, I have to question are they going to complete this project? The Chinese involvement compounds this...if EDF fails who owns the Hinkley C project? What if the French government call time on their bail out and sell their share? What if the Chinese buyout EDF? Or what if the Chinese pull out? If it all collapses who foots the bill to finish it? Will the UK government end up bailing it out....
And the proper conspiracy...is the Hinkley C project geared to intentionally fail or run out of money to force the government (French or British) to bail it out? Leading it back to the original question of whose power plant is it?

which then would lead to pretty tense trade negotiations

Send in Boris - that'll put an end to it (and him with a bit of luck)
Just build a couple of smaller cheaper plants with HS2 money.
But ebay/generator might be a plan. Buggered if I want to sit in the cold and dark

Anyone that has spent any time in Nigeria will smile at the power outage concerns. The power supply company was NEPA known colloquially as "Never Any Power Anywhere" Deep freezes would melt and refreeze and generators were common place. One major downside was the need to use the stairs rather than the lifts and 5 flights with briefcase and 90% humidity was no fun

NO WAY SHOULD THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT PERMIT SUCH AN IMPORTANT PROJECT IN THE HANDS OF THE CHINESE
By all means borrow the money and hire the skills to build it from wherever you get the best deal, but FFS don't let them OWN it
we have already p1ssed of the EU, now the Chinese
the mantra of the "free traders" - I.e most of the Brexiters is that the UK IS "open for business" to the rest of the world and we sell our national assets
but the whole point of the Brexit debate was that the UK becomes a "free trading" nation and specifically not part of any trading bloc - are you suggesting we can afford to p1ss off one of the biggest trading nations?

Open for business obviously , but not open to sell our national security to a nation who's long term strategy is not fully known -But given its provocation in the south china sea and sabre rattling with japan and the Philippines is obviously not prepared to take a back seat in the future of world politics.
A country that is a power house of hacking .
I DON'T TRUST THE CHINESE.
Sovereignty of our power , water and military is paramount .
I don't think that was the narrative proposed by Brexit.

you might find the book Private Island by James Meek enlightening

and a process of selling the UK assets accelerated right up until 2015

As far as BREXIT goes, I voted to remain, but that doesn't matter. What's done is done and we need to step up and make this work. I have no problem with the UK conducting fair and ethical trading with any nation on the planet. This isn't 'trade' in the normal sense though, is it.
This is the transference of ownership of part of our national industrial and energy infrastructure to a foreign power with, at the very best, questionable trading ethics and no conscience about how they get what they want. And BTW it's not just the Chinese I have an objection to selling out to, any foreign nation should have no holding power over our ability to support our national industry or population.
Look at what happened with TATA! That worked really well didn't it. Sell off the asset to foreign management for a fast buck, and when the **** hits the fan they drop us like a hot coal. This latest attempt to hive off the UK's wealth is just more of the same insanity.
Are we really saying it's a good idea to go on depleting our industrial and economic resources to the benefit of foreign governments? Utter nonsense is what it is.
Without the brain!
Like we really need that kind of business mentality with more footholds in this country.
Sure they'll get pi55ed off, but it's business and they know it, and until the contract is signed there is no contract. So it's only their egos and aspirations that have been damaged. They'll get over it when we get through this temporary turmoil and (hopefully) emerge as a stronger and independant global partner.

but the underlying philosophical economic argument from the (Tory) Brexiters is diametrically opposed to the sentiments in your post
Economic issues can be set aside here. The real questions is simple. Do we really want to be in the power of a country that aligns itself not only with Putin's Russia but with the madmen of North Korea? I think not.
Oh no, the Chinese are dismayed at our dalliance in making a decision about Hinkley.
From the BBC, "The Chinese Ambassador Liu Xiaoming said the delay to approving the plant had brought the two countries to a "crucial historical juncture".He hinted that "mutual trust" could be in jeopardy if the UK Government decided not to approve the deal."
I have no issues with Chinese individuals, but does anybody really (I mean really) trust the Chinese as a nation? They have proved themselves to be excellent at diving, but unfortunately they are pretty good at ducking as well

Cameron/Osborne negotiated an incredibly poor deal for the UK in which it would allow EDF/Chinese state controlled investors complete control the facility and to charge a guarenteed £92.50 per megawatt hour, the current price is £38 per megawatt hour!! Whilst this is deal is geared massively to the foriegn investors benefit, from a national security point of view, China could potentially hold the UK ransom and potentially do whatever it likes with the nuclear facility, a country who in all likelihood would be potential enemy of the UK in an unstable world and send the facility in to meltdown. I hope our new PM will withdraw from this very bad deal for our country's sake.
By all means trade with China, but not with our energy and utilities, what next outsource the running of HMNB Clyde to a Chinese state controlled company!?

Why would we give them control of a nuclear facility in our country?
