Turned out to be a poor connection to the screen. Not really much to go wrong with them.

Can you make any ajustments to the running of your engine with it or is it just for monitoring purposes only?

Just monitoring, useful tool without the need for loads of gauges. You can clear fault codes and reset the ecu though.

what sensors do they use for oil temp and pressure? do they have alarms?

Defi senders are the most common and an alarm can be set through the data monitor. They are an excellent bit of kit and well worth it if another comes up.

No you cut the plugs and wire them directly in to the connector blocks.
There is a terminal block on the back of the unit and depending on what version you have depends on what way they get wired.
