Movie mode takes some getting used to as the colour looks less vivid and whites have a beige tinge but that's how we see the world!

My stepdad always watched his TV in vivid/dynamic and I'm like wtf, Emmerdale isn't set in Florida!

 

Yeah, the beige does look a bit weird, but it all makes sense on the Tokyo vid'.

Netflix, Youtube and Amazon have 4k streaming, the BBC are looking to broadcast 4k as standard this year, phones can now record in 4k, and 4k UHD blurays are released in a couple of weeks.

The big question is do you wait for an HDR set!

 

We had 6 months Netflix thrown in as part of the deal.

I can! I'm not a materialistic consumerist fool in the race for 'things'. It does nothing to me. That is why.

Mind you, some little things can, of course, make me happy. But they don't have to be the newest models with better efficiency and performance. My latest 'thing' that I found was a broken brick. It has turned out to be ancient. I didn't pick it because it looked ancient. I just liked it, and it's just a chance that it's a rare one.

 

Yes, I was disappointed to read that, too. I've not tried the 3D out yet, but have bought the glasses.

you'll need to change the tv's 3D setting to get it playing in 3D, 10 second job.


This isn't too bad either, again you'll have to go to the TV's 3D setting to get the overlap to align.

 

Going back to this, we are looking to replace our 8 year old Panasonic Viera Plasma.
It's 42 inch at the moment with a huge frame, so 49 inch appears to be the max size we can get away with.

A friend of mine says that a high quality 1080p is currently a better option than a lower end 4k tv do due processing power. (He bought a samsung curved 49 inch curved tv a year ago which looks stunning)

Don't want to spend more than £600 and basically we want it to go for the tv which gives the best quality for mainly sky tv, amazon prime, netflix and a bit of xbox one gaming.

What are the best brands to go for?

 

Have a look at the Bravia KDL-48w705c and KDL-50w805c

The 705 is a Smart TV, although the smart function (you tube, amazon etc) are a little slow to use...works best when controlled via a smartphone/tablet

The latter is a android TV so should be a bit better

Speakers are rather poor, so will need an audio solution if you are fussy.

Personally I'd wait a bit as its around Feb/March when retailers start dumping whats left of last years stock as the new 2017 models are announced during the CES show (first week of January).

I'll keep an eye on here as I need to change my TV. All this new fangled technology has me lost. I've got a £650 credit note with John Lewis and will need to get one mid January. Also need to change my old Sony surround sound as it's never worked with this TV - had it 4 1/2 years - but still good for radio/cd's/

 

I was in the same boat and bought a new 4K Panasonic 50". Moved the old one, lifting its weighty shell and with little more than a finger popped the new one in its place. First impression was it looked hideous in comparison, cheap and flimsy and it sat way too high showing the cables coming out the back.

The solution was to change it back to the far better looking old Viera and stick the new TV on the wall in a guest bedroom where it looks fine on a bracket.

I'm still looking for a decent looking replacement.

 

1080 can't touch a mid range 4K HDR 1000 set, comparing UHD Premium sets to 1080 sets is like comparing HD tv to a black and white set.

As for a low end 4K HDR set I suspect this destroys any 1080 set:

I'd save up a bit longer and get the KS7000 though as that is special. HDR is the future of TV's and that's the entry model for meeting the current standard.
Only Samsung 4k sets are worth considering for gaming, the rest are too laggy. The KS7000 for example can manage 20ms lag input whilst piped with an HDR feed, which is insane

Both the PS4 Pro and XBOX One S are starting to get HDR games/game updates! For example a bolt of lightning on one of the brighter HDR sets will be 10 times brighter and make the image really pop!!

 

I bought this a few months back for £700 including free 7 year warranty from Richer Sounds. No complaints. Excellent 4K picture and PS4 gaming! Well actually the sound isn't the greatest but I've got a soundbar hooked up.

Just bought a new 32" JVC,(needed to be 32") looked at all the fancy stuff with internet etc and was totally under-whelemed by it all, paid around the £150 mark, sorry but I just don't get what all the fuss is about. I don't do games as I think they're just a waste of life, and I already have a computer that I can use to watch just about anything that exists and transfer it to the tv screen if I feel the need.

I do like my tv time. Nothing more relaxing than curling up on the sofa after a hard day, stick on a film and lose yourself. Same goes for games.
I get far less time to myself these days due to having 2 kids, but, when they are in bed, the tv usually goes on.

So, I want a decent tv. Not a crappy budget model.

The effect of HDR on TV's in the showroom is muted as TV's are showing the demo in vivid/dynamic mode, all the picture is bright.

When you see HDR on a calibrated 4K TV in Movie Mode then it will change your perception of TV. You can have a shot of the night sky all dull and murky then a blast of lightning suddenly fires across the screen almost appearing as real electricity, it is that bright. But it's not a fake brightness like vivid mode, the clouds stay murky with a little more shadow detail from the glow of the lightning.

I've just played Ghostbusters (2016) on my class leading Panasonic 4K bluray player, it's one sh*t film but when those proton pack streams light up insanely bright without saturating into detail in the background it just blows you away.

The 1455 cd/m2 Samsung KS9500 for example can show a light source on the picture nearly 15 times brighter than a 1080 set. For things like stars, slug trails, explosions, car headlights, lightning or sunlight glinting off a lake this is phenomenal. It adds contrast, depth and realism.

Afaik Dolby are working on a 4000 1455 cd/m2 screen which currently needs cooling fans but my 4k player outputs up to 10,000 cd/m2, so exciting times ahead.

My dad's TV is a Samsung KS8000 and it comes with a "Special viewing mode" option that converts normal content to HDR, it's a bit hit and miss on SD and HD content (Dad's Army looked horrific) but for 4k youtube videos it really adds pop to footage of things like Tokyo's neon lights.

I vape because I'm one of those strange people that enjoys smoking, for the most part what I vape doesn't even have any nicotine in either, so not addicted to nicotine either.

I get the relaxing in front of the tv after a long day, I just think that there's an awful lot of hype that goes with some of the more expensive sets, I stood in the store with about £500 to spend, insurance payout for lighting strike which is what took out my tv and Sony surround sound (going to fix the surround sound as it's only the output that's gone) but I just couldn't see the other £2/300's worth in the other more expensive tv's, mine is a led JVC-LT 32 V250 and the picture quality to my eyes looked pretty good in the store when compared side by side and as mentioned I don't game and I don't really need internet on my tv, and I can tell you it's certainly not crappy.

P.S, I have a projector and the surround sound for when I want to see films on a big screen.
