That's a good point. I would probably say it's terrorism when the act is designed to instil fear or terror into a community/population by the act itself.

This attack looks like revenge more than anything - they were targeting a specific group of people, not just killing indiscriminately like the attacks in Canada for example, but they are instilling fear into the population so the effect is that of terrorism.

Muslim leaders need to speak very loudly and clearly to denounce this latest act of barbarism.

It's all very well ***** footing around the issue but if the "moderate majority" don't make enough noise, it tars them all.

Appalling act; always incredibly cowardly too.

Which Muslims are sticking together? The Sunnis and Wahabis? The Shi'ites?
Wahhabi are Sunni.

Just heard about this. very sad
Friend of mine told me, and she's in Paris, not too close to where this happened, but some of her co-workers are fairly close. thankfully they are all safe.

I have to say I wouldn't like to be a muslim in Paris today, as you just *know* that people will be accusing any muslim of being a terrorist.

There is something very seriously wrong with some people, who seem to think this kind of thing is the right way to go about expressing displeasure about something, moreso when it's something as innocuous as a picture / comic. Yes, poking the bear (and they would have known this), but even still.

Within Sunni Islam there are hadiths that explicitly forbid depictions of Mohammad. Moreover, should one's depiction be mocking and or disrespectful in tone, one makes oneself vulnerable to Islamic 'justice'. The publication was a legitimate target.

Yes but that's all made up nonsense.
Murdering 12 people isn't.

Legitimate to those who are completely and utterly blinded by religion then. Not the normal balanced individuals that tend to make up the world.

I think it's statements like that which make most question muslims / islam and dislike them so much, the whole "well, if one believes that then all of them do".

As for islamic "justice", perhaps non islamic people should mete out some of our own "justice" in retaliation. It does not matter if innocents are in the way, they don't care, so why should we.

Reverted to the original form of Islam. The dominant sect in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam's founder.

So let me understand this, 'Islamic gunmen' have shot dead 12 people because a satirical magazine printed funny cartoons taking the mick out of Islam?

Wow!

Good work, so now the pictures that would have been seen by relatively few and vanished are now going to be all over the internet seen by millions and millions of people. That worked a treat didn't it. Freedom of speech boys, it's what makes these modern civilised countries so good.. You know, the countries you all flock toward to live in.

These people do not belong in the civilised world!

Totally agree.

We base things on science and fact, and that's how it should be. People who still base things on myth and tradition should not be able to have any influence on our laws and way of life. It's 2015 FFS, not the middle ages.

This attack (along with all the other Islamic terror attacks - others that spring to mind are the Sydney kidnapping recently, the attacks in Canada, the beheading in the US etc) just reaffirm that multiculturalism doesn't work. Yes we should allow immigration, and yes we NEED immigration, but immigrants must be willing to adopt our values and way of life otherwise we are sowing the seeds for bloodshed.

Yep, read that. Apart from this:

On the one hand, ISIS is deeply Wahhabist. On the other hand, it is ultra radical in a different way. It could be seen essentially as a corrective movement to contemporary Wahhabism.
I.e. the duality between the Wahhabism of ISIS and the House of Saud, I'm not sure what your point is.

Salafist Islam does not allow for multiculturalism, so you have, perhaps unwittingly, something in common. Don't attack multiculturalism, attack apartheid.

Yep, that seems to be the justification for murder. The magazine insulted these people by publishing fictional depictions of a fictional character, who has never existed. You are free to believe what you want as long as you believe the same as these people. If not, you will be peacefully murdered.

How many religions have a dedicated word for other people who do not believe in their god?

Mohammad isn't a fictional character.
