Omg! I thought I had imagined that film!! No one I know has ever seen it. Oddly, that scene is the only one I remember. Victim was a dreadlocked "yardie" right? Would love to see it through fully. Was channel hopping and didn't really see it all. Did look very gritty though.

I saw a film called House of sand and Fog last night. If you're interested in watching quality acts and don't mind a tragic epic to go with them, watch this film. The film doesn't just have Kingsley at his best again, but the remote beauty Jennifer Conneley and the Iranian-American actress Shohreh Aghdashloo also stun you with their strong performances. I later found out that the film received various nominations and got some awards as well. Well deserved imo.

It's a long time since I have seen House of Sand and Fog and my only criticism of it was I found the tragic events unfolding so merciless in places that it was hard to maintain any sympathy for the characters at times.... but that minor gripe aside it was a very well acted and perfectly paced piece of properly scripted drama.

In fact now you've reminded me of it I shall find it and watch it again.

 

Two excellent foreign films I've seen recently, and would highly recommend (if you don't mind subtitles)

- Headhunters (2011) - imdb 7.6 - Norwegian thriller, expect a Hollywood remake!

- The Hunt (2013) - imdb 8.3 - Danish drama staring Mads Mikkelsen (baddie from Casino Royale)

 

Not many, but I think we do have some people here that venture here for a bit of an escape and a little tittle-tattle, but in reality, they run quite deep.


To me, it was exactly the opposite. I found it impossible not to have sympathy for any character, and that's what I recognise as the strength of the film script and film direction. Had I read the book first, I could have compared the impact. But then again, I could have reserved some biases, so it's better that I didn't. The powerful metaphor of the bird abstractly echoed on so many levels in the film, and the one as the unforgettable lingering shadow is Esmail, the young boy- the one who carried the soul of the story. Not sure if he was nominated for any award, but he, as an actor was phenomenal in the film, not just because he had that role. Excellent film. Not easy to push it out of your head.

 

That's interesting, I shall have to watch it again as I think I saw it in 2004.... I will report back

 

It's easy to lump Robocop in with Terminator and Predator etc but true discerning movie buffs know Paul Paul Verhoeven's classic works on many levels.

 

Jo Nesbo's head hunters is without doubt one of the greatest movie experiences Iv ever had the pleasure of watching, superbly acted throughout, twists and turns with good suspense, essential viewing.

It's a thriller and a very violent one at that but it's a crime movie in the same vein as Fargo and has a real Coenesque vibe to it so between cringing at the gore I was in fits of laughter, as an incompetent group men mess with one another with the intent of being the last man standing to secure the whole jackpot of a huge betting win.
The whole story is told in series of flashbacks as one of the group is questioned by a police detective with, shall we say, unconventional methods. Needless to say the ending is not what you expect as the whole sequence of events is finally revealed.
A must see if you liked head hunters.

Just watched a film so scary that it nearly made me need a pillow for the first time since 1992.

 

What?

I've just finished watching A Lonely Place to Die. I'd only really put it on in the background, then ended up watching all of it.

Now I have to go and iron my stuff for work.

 

I made the mistake of thinking it would be 75 minutes of ham. I've never seen a film build the tension so well.

 

I nearly watched A Lonely Place to Die, but decided against it. Just the Jonathan Creek freaks me out before going to bed, so The Lonely Place......... horror could have given me some creeps in bed. That's why. Was it effective?

I watched a horror movie last year on TV with the daughter around her exam preparation time. It was really old film and so silly that we laughed at the horror in it all the way through. All ghosts and goblin props were very poorly made, the acting by the actors was diabolical and the sh7t music didn't even have any eerie kick to even make me cats jump. I'd like to know which film that was. Very ridiculous film.

My Sunday film was The Soloist. I liked it despite all those mediocre media reviews. Jamie Foxx was quite good in it. I think the reviewers would have liked to watch Ayers to be more tormented than the independent, chilled-out street wanderer; for drama purposes. Anyway, it was a good watch, I thought.

I wouldn't really class it as a horror. More a thriller with a bit violence, but not all that bad. It didn't frighten me, but in my opinion, it was gripping.

That said, I had an awful nights sleep with odd dreams, but I do from time to time, so I'm not putting that down to the film.

 

Might be worth a watch.

It's not a gruesome film though, is it? I like a good thriller/suspense, but I'm not a fan of blood and guts and gore.

 

I wish I'd have stuck with it. After a Sunday lie in as per usual I struggled to sleep. It seemed very slow, so ended up watching 8 out of 10 cats instead lol.

 

Eh? Predator and The terminator are amazing films I could watch over and over again.
Robocop is ok, but is mainly violent for the sake of being violent.

No blood, it's a film that mainly relies on the viewers imagination to make it enjoyable or not.

Hence why critics loved it and the public didn't.

 

You misunderstand me. All 3 are great but Robocop works on different levels, it has many political/social aspects etc. Consumerism and Reaganism etc etc.

The title suggested an action flick that would have put many off, Robocop is art, a film Kubrick or the guy who made Twin Peaks would have been proud of.

 

I liked No Country for Old Men for a thriller / crime / suspense sort of film. The film causes you some disturbance whilst watching it. Some people I know reported broken sleep, insecure nightmares etc. after watching this film. I myself slept sound through the night after watching it, though.
