Best turbo for Quarter mile
10 years of 'get an STI' and nothing - ten days of 'WRX is faster' and all hell breaks lose.
The Impreza world has been turned on it's head.
The WRX is now the speed king and the 2003 WRX V-Limited has taken over the 22B's mantle of best Scoob of all time.

Boosted gets me.
It's important not to push a turbo on a WRX. You'll create unwanted heat and torque.
Torque is the enemy of a drag car running road tyres anyway.
The question is though, if you keep torque under 350lbft, keep the engine cool by only ever doing the odd drag run and use a big turbo what bhp can the WRX bottom end take running low boost? I would have thought 370/370 no way, but 400/330?
I've read a piece by a Subaru tuner in the USA and he says all WRX failures on the WRX are due to #3 cylinder overheating because it's near the red hot up-pipe, turbo and down-pipe and they further that heat wrapping/blanketing all 3 can seriously improve longevity of the WRX block.
I'd seriously like to know how far I can take advantage of the 5 speed.

The small turbo thing isn't always what it's cracked up to be

Im setting my classic up for quarter mile fun with some friends. Its a kinda budget build so i dont wanna throw loads of money at it but
Im just wondering what the best turbo is in terms of quick blast down the quart mile strip? Presume i need something small so little lag,
Ive got a apexi power FC and commander to manage it all, Full decat exhaust and usual bolt on mods

Budget: Cheap.
You're not going to get an 11/10 second car for £50. How about, you start an new thread explaining exactly what you'd like to achieve.
300-350 bhp is plenty enough to have fun with mates, and if you're better than them at racing, then you'll beat much more powerful cars at times.

My wrx blew the original gearbox with just the ppp however the second box with unknown origins survived 2 years of B road blasting and a hand full of hard launches and flat foot gear changes at 360hp
Launch a 360bhp at 6-7k next to a 470bhp STI an watch it in your wing mirror. It will catch you eventually but it's a bit closer when you race 400-450bhp STI's. Under 400bhp and your 360bhp WRX will eat it.
You talk the biggest load of bollox of anyone on here.
Here is your scenario of a 350bhp WRX against my 443bhp STi, Bedford track, February 2013. I come out of the pits on a warm up and my mate Paul, having done a couple of laps already, comes past me after the first corner. At 45 seconds in to the vid we come on to the back straight and he has about 50 metres on me.
I'll let the pictures do the talking.
BTW this is no disgrace to my mate, WRX's are fine with me, just fed up with reading this idiot's drivel.

I've never said a WRX should beat an STI with more than 20% power but it'll beat or match an STI with up to 20% more power. Ala 350bhp WRX beats a 400bhp STI but should struggle against a 420-450 STI even if it gets a jump on the STI off the line. I've left 500bhp STI's for dead as they struggle with 450lbft going through an insanely short 1st and 2nd gear. They caught me by the 100-200m point but on the roads a few have given up after seeing me pull away on shorter runs.
People will get it in the end after I drill it home long enough.

Quite palinly it isn't so as usual you are still talking out of your ****-Matt.
I must have the quickest impreza in the world with the diesel ratios then....
On that note is anyone using the boxer diesel 6 speed gearbox or even gearsets?

'More than a match' is something you'd say if you were confident of easy or frequent victory.
A 350bhp WRX being a match for a 450bhp STI just means it'll be close. I've never said (re: road or drag racing) a STI with more than 20% more power than a WRX will be easily beaten.
At this level driver skill will be a big player.
Yep, 420bhp onwards v a 350bhp WRX and that 20% window is eroding, a 350bhp WRX v a 460BHP and even driver skill is starting to be taken out of the equation. 350 v 450 is possible but like I say a struggle.
For example I pulled a 12.6 with 333bhp the RCM STI Bugeye pulled 12.5 with 475bhp. Certainly a close match but at the same time a struggle.
At 460bhp an average STI driver will be spinning, hitting the limiter, struggling to shift accurately and efficiently but even if a WRX gets the jump it won't be for long.
