Cool , can you compare the wastegate port size to the OEM 16G? I've heard that they're too small on the ebay 20G's and need to be ported out.

Will do, heard this also, will port if required, or just use the 16g housing.

That's fair enough.

You're going to need more power, as you said earlier, than me to do similar times.

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs, I've seen the other posts so know that you know about drag racing.

Your car is heavier for starters, then your gearbox will be heavier than the OEM 5 speed. Your brakes are heavier that what was on mine, I had 2 pot fronts and 1 pot rears.

Look forward to seeing it come together.

Thanks mate, I prefer the newage from the old age, less rust and isofix in the back for baby seat, bla, bla, bla.
My blob is still 300kg lighter than my old golf that did 12's

Great minds think alike, as that's what I would probably do!

Ouft £166 turbo is here

Wastegate hole does look
Like it could go bigger, maybe put it on the mill and open it up.
Turbo looks cracking though

Blimey, that IS a small w/g port!

Good luck - interested to see how these perform/hold up...

Yeah, not sure if it's a problem or not, I never checked the last one I used so cant say what size it was, but it wasn't a problem anyway.
I'll probably open it up a fraction, to be on the safe side.

Bigger wastegate is only ever going to help, the exhaust side of this turbo is no bigger than the 16g I'm running, so any extra gas made from extra power will be getting gated.

That wastegate port appears a lot smaller than the standard 16G. I have one stripped at the moment I can measure for you later?

Maybe use newage sti rods and pistons, as they will handle 400 no problem and would be pretty cost effective

H beam rods bought and comming home this week.
These pistons look more than strong enough, I was running 2 bar boost on my golf with cast NA pistons no probs, looked nothing like as strong as these

Defo. Going to clean the garage a bit this weekend, make some room for building this engine up.

Steel ones lol. £40 finest.
Been running re-used ones for the past 7000 miles now without problem, 1.5 bar up them too. Hylomar head gaskets FTW!
So new ones have got to be better!

RCM head gaskets are only a bit more than OEM and work very well.

I struggle to buy into the HG problem thing, I think it's more of a temperature, flatness, clamping thing.
I have split MLS head gaskets when using decomp plates on Na engines that I have turboed on countless occasions, never have any HG issues. The subaru has more bolts per cylinder than a 4cyl too. Having not had a problem with the second hand ones I'm currently running I just can't justify splashing out on head gaskets. I will maybe make some high tensile studs with nuts the increase clamping force (not spending £200 on studs!) but I think the gaskets won't be a problem. There are cosworth YB's and SAAB b204/234's making 400hp 2.0 bar boost on fibre gaskets!
Is 360-380 hp and 1.6-1.7 bar too much to ask of a MLS gasket? Do they blow out?

It's funny cuz you say what a lot of people don't , I'm sure there are a good few who have run hg's twice and other frowned upon practices but no one dare mention it lol , I have a cobbled together engine with newage wrx used crank , sti7 rods , classic forged pistons with their orig rings etc
Hasn't many hours on it yet so might lie down at the first sign of boost but sure , it's cost me very little and taught me a lot

Good thread carry on

My thinking with re using te gaskets I'm currently running was that if it's ok to re use a decomp plate, split a new MLS head gasket and put the plates either side with some hylomar then re using basically sound looking gaskets with a bit of hylomar would be fine, and they have been with 7000 miles 1.5 bar and 300+hp. No coolant use or pressurising coolants system at all.
I think the new MLS gaskets I have bought will be fine for what I'm doing, providing the block and heads are flat and clean and that I don't cook the engine (this aneals the bolts and you loose all clamping effort)
Still brain storming head stud ideas

Sorry, a little bit late. The flap itself is 33mm diameter and the port appears to be 25mm. Don't have a caliper handy to measure it accurately but I think I'm bang on with it anyway.
