I guess 2003 Blobeyes must have different airbags fitted then.

 

Just been to my Local dealer, who did know about the recall, checked my Reg and told me that mine was on the recall, one of 10400 Subarus.

Subaru UK have not come to an agreement with the airbag manufacturer, so they have taken my details and will contact me when there is a resolution.

In the mean time i have been told not to carry passengers in the front seat.

Mine is a 55 plate Hawk.

Aylesbury dealer (Adams Brothers) did same for me. took details and told me not to carry any passengers till fixed. I might just pull the fuse, sounds like that will be safer than getting shrapnel from the airbag!! Anyone know where the fuse is for it?

 

K T Green (Leeds) told me they will contact me when they have the parts. Not being the original owner of my car I only found out about this through a Facebook post, I imagine there are lots of people unaware of this

 

Keth Price (Abergavenny) told me much the same

They know about the recall and they have been told by Subaru in Japan that they are aware of the problem but are in negotiations with the company who supplied the airbag system on a way forward (who is going to pay )

My car a 2007 STI is on the list of defected ones and I will be contact by letter by Subaru UK to arrange the works

In the meantime to not carry any passengers in the front seat.!

I can't go months without being able to carry passengers in the front seat. also, my son sits in his car seat directly behind the front passenger seat. think I will be moving his seat to the other side as any shrapnel would go straight through the seat, surely?

Probably overreacting but I can't ignore the possibility.

 

If you deliberately disable part of a car's 'safety' system by removing a fuse, and then are unfortunate enough to be invloved in an accident, how will that affect your ability to claim on your insurance.
Whilst I understand that the said 'safety' system now poses a threat, that is purely accidental whereas you disabling it isn't.

 

Well surely if the air bags are disabled, it's not going to stop me from having an accident is it?
Personal injury claims may be an issue but I'm more worried about metal shards exploding in my car with my family inside it!

I hear what you're saying as a parent too, but you have to remember that this recall is based primarily on the effects of a very small number of incidents seen in high moisture or humidity countries (ie America), where moisture has reached the propellant wafers in the airbag mechanism, causing the inflators to rupture with metal fragments potentially striking and injuring vehicle occupants.

With the UK not being one of those high humidity countries, I don't think we have to be over-cautious about moisture reaching the airbag mechanism and causing a failure. We know this has only happened a few times and never in the UK or in a Subaru. IMHO I believe Subaru UK's advice to avoid carrying front passengers is more of a legal response than anything else. Afterall, Takata weren't going to go global with this recall originally, it was only to be exercised in the affected countries.

With this in mind I'm happy to keep the passenger airbag enabled and drive with front passengers. My car will have the remedial work completed when the time comes.

 

Am I correct in thinking that the passenger airbag is only activated when there is a passenger in the seat as what is to stop the metal fragments from ejecting in the driver's direction or toward back seats?

Yeah we don't get a lot of moisture in the UK do we... Do you work for Subaru by any chance? Maybe you should tell your passengers about the increased risk potential and let then decide whether to travel with you or not, since you dont seem to care much about them.

 

No, I don't work for Subaru, I'm just going on the information given to me during a lengthy phone call I had with Subaru Customer Services when the recall was first announced, to see if they would cover my parallel import.

After putting the details of the recall into perspective I've made an informed decision to continue carrying passengers. That doesn't mean to say I'm ignoring it (as I will get the airbag swapped out when the time comes), I'm just not going to unnecessarily fret about it.

Well, I'm all done, 40 mins work on friday afternoon and my Airbag has been replaced.

Just in time before the dealer ends their Subaru contract and it would all start again from scratch with a new dealership.

Happy days, I can have passengers in the front again

I phoned europa sheffield and mine is on the recall list. They have put mine on the waiting list. I asked how long. They are only getting 1 new airbag each MONTH for the recalls!

I even complained to the manager, he said all that's all they had been allocated by the manufacturer

Just had a phone call from Cotswold Subaru, cars booked in for Saturday. £900 worth of air bag to be fitted!!

 

Strangely, I had a call this morning from Stan Palmer Subaru in Carlisle saying the same thing They said that they actually had 2 in this month. Full crdit to Rob Ostle at SP - my car is a Jap import and he pestered Subaru UL to put the Jap chassis numbers on their system. Obviously succeeded!

 

Suddenly realised that I'd heard nothing from the garage after emailing them in June. I've sent another message today. At least some people are getting theirs fixed

I've had 3 so far within a week, we try to keep a fast turn around on them and get the effected units sent back asap so we keep a steady cycle going. The jap chassis number was causing me a few headaches as discussed due to being 8 digits shorter. Got there in the end and kept the original appointment.

found out through IM that my local dealer who I contacted back in June 2015 has a surplus of airbags in, so wondering why I haven't received a call, will be ringing tomorrow to find out.

 

I too have had no concrete feedback from the 3 local dealers I contacted and Subaru UK from the time this whole situation came to light. My car is an import and I was assured I had been put on the 'list'. Not impressed at all.
