London can be annoying but Machester is a total c¥nt factory, I have never met a manc who wasn't a total ****. Scousers might talk funny but they seem to have all the charm and charisma that the mancs are missing. I would rather live in a Venezuelan slum than Manchester.

Cameron's only nod to there being an issue was his stupid Internet adult content opt in nonsense and even that was more about snooping on the population than 'protecting the children'.

Yeah, I'm fine with that....so long as I can shoot Terry Christian first.
Anyhoo, whilst I see the attraction of devolved governments and micro-management independent of Westminster. I can't help but think all this will do is create more pigs at already over-subscribed trough. I want less of Westminster and more reformation of it....not a load of corrupt mini-westminsters popping up everywhere that only serve the politicians and Councillors (and Mayors) that run it.

I've been to a fair number of world cities in the last few months, and I visited London at the weekend to watch a show and do some tourist stuff and had a great time.
Lots of happy people from all over the world safely enjoying the famous landmarks of the city.

I'd love to go to London as a tourist now. I usually go there with work, but it will be good to go in a double decker tourist bus and sit next to a Japanese; just to test that if he/she smiles back to me. They never used to, because they were too busy with their cameras.
Mind you, even if I get to sit next to a Londoner stranger, there's no guarantee I'm going to get a friendly smile. The chances are 1 in 500, if I'm not being too lenient. In North Wales, the chances are 500 in 1, if I am being miser.

I don't think South Walians get no smiles in North Wales, and just get ignored. In order to get smile, you haver to omit a radiant smile. Try it next time, it may work. Not sure if it will, in London, though.

Ok, maybe not as bad as I said but in Caernarvon where we spent months working some of the pubs didn't take to us very well as we were Welsh but didn't speak the lingo. It was the same in Aberporth, locals didn't take to us very well though we did tend to use pubs where the locals went rather than touristy places. Probably don't like the North/South divivde. And yes we can smile as much as anyone, in fact we were probably laughing at the gogs anyway.

Interesting to learn of your experience, Chip. Perhaps they thought that you didn't value your Welsh language enough to learn it and speak it.
I was often and still get told from the North Wales non-Welsh speakers and the English ones that Welsh lingo speakers are rude because they start talking in Welsh to each other/one another as soon as they see a foreigner approaching or even a non-lingo Welsh around.
On contrary, I felt that they speak in Welsh because they want to, and they like to. I am actually very proud of their pride and their attention to the heritage value of their language, and I wish I could speak it as well as they do. I don't think Welsh people start criticising anyone in their own language (may be they do, and good that I don't understand it), and I don't think it's rude for them to start their chitter-chatter in Welsh, as long as they don't alienate me completely. As long as they can speak a bit of English for me to understand them and for them to understand me, that's good enough for me. Fortunately, all Welsh people I know speak English.
Some Welsh speaking Welsh tell me that they couldn't speak a word of English until their high school time. They also tell me how discriminated and put down they felt in English places like London etc. because of their accent and their place of origin etc.

Not necessarily they were criticising him, you know. There's no way of him knowing that if he didn't understand the language, but saying that, more is conveyed via non-verbal ways than the words themselves. So, perhaps they were showing their contempt towards him through their gestures? Anyway, ignorance can be a bliss, sometimes.
Back to the Welsh talking, if the couple started to chat with each other in Welsh as soon as they saw your friend, they must be feeling quite threatened by him, and therefore, they went right back to their Welsh roots. But that, in return, caused your English speaking friend a reverse threat, and he started to get all uncomfortable with that. Perhaps as soon as they started talking in Welsh even occasionally, he automatically entered a super alert mode.

We had Muppets place here on SN where the in-jokes exchange and closed circuit sarcasm were rife among the clickety-clique clip-clappers. Ok, there was no physical language involved, but enough vibes via keyboard were given to inform others that they weren't welcome there. That behaviour was rude, and made new people feel excluded. Clip-clappers thought they were above everyone else, anyway; in-joke or any silly joke situation.
That place is dead now.

TBH I'm very sorry to know that some some no-Welsh speaking English as well as some non-Welsh speaking Welsh have experienced such a rudeness and hostility from the Welsh speaker Welsh. I also feel bad for the Welsh that feel discriminated by the English in a place like London etc.
I hope we all can live together in a more loving society one day.

I think it's very one sided though, I have met many, many Welsh people who genuinely detest the English yet have never been further east than Port Talbot. (They still support Man U though lol) however I have never witnessed any animosity the other way round.
I'm stuck in the middle as a Welshman who the Welsh think is English and the English think is Welsh!

Agreed, it is very sad and narrow minded.

We have Chester about 14-16 miles away from us. Welsh people like to go there, but it is usual for the Welsh lads to come back home bruised and pasted. They say that a lot of fights in Chester night-out are simply due to the English lads acting all superior and full of contempt on the Welsh lads; just because they are Welsh outsiders.
In last few years, we have Wrexham that has developed well in terms of night life. Welsh report that they feel less threatened now at a night out on Wrexham than in Chester.
