Been watching that on ebay. Went with a VF35 in the end but saw the discount come up. Seems like a really good bargain and have yet to hear anything that would put me off buying one in the future...
Where abouts in Farnborough was the rolling road? I lived in Fleet before Wokingham and therefore know that area very well. Never realised there was a rolling road so local!

No they were tight, it was fine for about 6 months, they had backed off a bit though because they weren't that tight when I took them out. I'm going to recheck them again in a few weeks to make sure they haven't slackened off again.

I see, yeah need to be FT by the sounds, might of got away with just tightening them up? Gaskets done now though, did you get away with just removing the bolts and sliding the old gasket out and new one in? Without removing the up pipe etc?

Wife called this morning, car is misfiring again...
I swear to god I'm going to ban her from driving it, it only ever goes wrong with her driving it.
More fun and games to sort out now, hopefully someone simple like a coilpack or an airleak.

Not seent the car yet, going to have a look on my lunch break. Its obviously an expensive engine so paranonia is kicking in big style at the moment!

Had a quick look, think its a coil pack. Certainly not ringlands or engine related anyway thank god
Its got a hit and miss misfire on idle that clears a bit when you give it some revs, so I'm thinking coil pack. I'll plug it in later and see if it tells me anything as to which one it might be.

Out of nowhere though? Wouldn't have thought so. They're not that old and were cleaned when the engine was built.
Plugs are gapped as they came as they're iridium so don't really want to break them. Coil packs are over 11 years old and 77k miles roughly.

OK plugged it in. Cylinder #1 misfire, I really think its a coil now.
It comes and goes, it will idle missing away to itself and flashing the check engine light, then when the fan kicks in it'll idle fine and even after the fan has cut back out it'll continue fine until you touch the throttle and it'll start up again. Seems if you add a touch more load with the fan, or make the engine work by turning the steering it idles a lot better.
Also if you hold it at 3k rpm or so you can here the cylinder coming and going with like a car with leads that is sparking out before it gets to the plug. I can also smell fuel.
So need to get a coil to try on it, anyone local got one? .

I don't think its a valve, it would misfire all the time and not come a go. When the ringlands were shot it had a constant misfire because of the low compression and struggled to start, you could hear the lack of compression spinning it over.
Sounds fine spinning over and starts quick enough, a shot valve would have low compression in one cylinder and you'd hear it whilst cranking.

Car has been fine the last 2 days...
It was bad when it was wet. With the power feeling like it was going from 4500ish rpm after fixing the exhaust leak, misfire in the wet etc sounds like coil. Picking one up saturday am to swap on.

Had a fiddle with the car today. Drove it this morning. Runs fine normal driving, let it idle for a length of time and a miss starts to happen, then misses as you pull away and clears itself up again and drives fine. Almost like a Vac leak.
So anyway grabbed the replacement coil this morning, swapped the coil over started it up, let it idle for absolutely ages, no misfire, took it for a drive to get it nice and hot then let it idle again, still no misfire. I am getting very faint bops occasionally after idling for a while but nothing compared to what it was doing.
It's still not pulling right at higher rpm (don't know if this is a map issue or related though).
Did the burnt valve test with some paper near the exhaust, all pushing out, no suction. No excess crankcase pressure either (I know exactly what this looks like after having an engine with shagged ringlands!) I could compression test it but I couldn't be arsed to remove a ton more stuff when it seems fine.
Fuel pump sounds a bit funky however, primes, start car, then I can hear it priming again for a while and easing off.... Also there was a bit of a fuel smell under the bonnet when the misfire was bad on Weds evening. I believe the FPR is hooked up the intake runner of cylinder #1? I wonder if its got an issue?
