biggest issue is 50k (amg styling are all extra cost) for whats effectively a hot hatch is alot of money.
2 series bmw fully loaded comes in a tad over 40k and m4 comes in at 56k.
just seems alot fo money for what it is to me.

Our manual van has it; just holds on a hill for a few seconds. Occasional handy.
Have Mercs still got silly handbrakes? A few plus of our car is the old school proper handbrake!

I have a one year old C class and yes it has the stupid American style foot operated 'handbrake'.
Mines a 7g Auto so never use it, just leave it in park...
Not sure if the new C Class has it though.

In the 5 series they have a P button you click to hold the car when your in traffic, so you don't have to keep your foot on the brake. Do you not have this feature in your M135 ?
On the A45 its standard you just press the brake HARD and it goes into Hold mode, so in theory like a handbrake but soon as you touch the accelerator it moves forward, lazy handbrake.
Great feature for both Merc and BMW, but BMWs can be toggled on or off, without it your car creeps forward correct ? like all autos if your not on the brake.
That being said I did use it on my E350 and wife got in the back, Kids kicking off, I turned round hit the pedal and ran over her foot LOL

I quote
When you come to a stop, simply push the brake pedal unnecessarily forward in its travel. The word "HOLD" will appear in the trip computer and the car will automatically apply the brakes to keep you in place. This allows you to rest your foot/ankle or prime it above the accelerator.

Strangely, our driveway is over a little drop kerb. The 335d was impossible to reverse in smoothly. No issues with the M135i; I can be a docile little town car or a bit of an A/B road animal, especially in Sport+.
I never use the handbrake; the handbrake was almost certainly responsible for a wheel/brake judder issue on the old car.
No need with an auto unless on a ferry or similar.

The sale guy explained it to my wife when she collected her new A200 - it's got it too.
Just seemed a bit dopey to me, but hey, its not my car

You'd have to be bonkers to spend £50k on a hot hatch!

Tell that to Impreza Cosworth owners
I don't see the issue with it being "a lot for a hatchback."
I'd call it "not bad value for a bear supercar baiting, semi bespoke car."
Similar (to a lesser extent) with ours; £30k (with no options) is an expensive hatch. But name any 220+bhp/tonne, 4.6 (Autocar) to 60, sub 11s to 100 turbo'd six pot cars with four seats and a boot this side of £50k?
There aren't any.

Brake/hill assist is not a new thing, I first came across it about 4/5 years ago in a transit van, I first thought that I had all of a sudden become perfect at hill starts. I then realised what was happening and in turn was very impressed. I have since experienced it in a new Astra, the VW cc, VW golf and then a few more. I would now except to find it on just about any new car and for once its a bit of tech that I actually like. The pushing hard of the brake and having to use a button is new to me, I am used to coming to a stop, whether on a hill or on the flat at the lights, it just holds while drawing very little attention to itself.
I hate the button that replaces the handbrake though, first of all no more handbrake turns and secondly another job that is being handed over to the car with less involvement from the driver. I once fuelled my car and while doing so I had been walking around in diesel fuel unknowingly and as I pulled out of the station to approach a cue of cars at the lights I slipped of the brake. Luckily I was able to grab the handbrake in time and stop, had I had a button to press (that only works when stopped) I would of had my first and only crash/accident.
And I don't see why a hatch or any other car be it a saloon etc has to fall in to a certain price bracket. If it's got what you're paying for ie big engine and spec then who cares what shape it is.
And oh yes....just to throw the cat among the pigeons, John at Mangoletsi is in the process of offering a 450bhp package probably with 3 years warranty and with forged internales for around 40k if you didn't already know. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
P.s no need for the lecture, iam just having a play, I appreciate the ups and downs of both cars, whether it be a Merc or bmw or golf ect that you compare it to.

I wasn't questioning the Mercs road tax!! I find it quite funny that you can pay £180 a year road tax on a AMG mercedes that has 360bhp and all the bells & whistles, and then the new Impreza STi is nearly £500 for basically a standard 300bhp car.
Personally I think the high road tax has killed the Impreza/Evo market in the UK, and it amazes me that people think its ok to run a impreza/Evo with its high maintenance/fuel and £500 road tax, they must have more money then sense!!

It would also seem that mpg is not of much of a week point with the sti and for someone like me that doesn't pay road tax and doesn't commute the sti is not so bad on these issues.
It is also a assumption of mine that the a45 and 135i with the slight exception of the golf will struggle with the 2.4 children summer holidays, thus not even being an option for the man with the more productive loins.

You will be pay quite a high % of the (decreasing) value simply to have it on the road - year on year
Coupled with the new rules on insurance/mot/sorn along with digital enforcement and they will be a financial liability
