I was taught BLS when I was very young, and have pretty much been taught it yearly since.

When I was about 18 my father and I saw an old lady drop at a bus stop on New Street in Birmingham. Bear in mind that this is a busy place and it was the middle of the day. A huge crowd of people gathered round her and noone really knew what to do. We were walking down the street, actually in quite a hurry to get somewhere but our curiosity got the better of us and we got back about 30 seconds after she had gone. She was grey when we got to her, and clearly without a pulse.

To cut a long story short we successfully resuscitated her and she was taken off by an ambulance, a little confused and as far as we know was discharged from hospital a few days later.

But what got me was the reaction of people around us. Halfway through someone came and grabbed my father, trying to pull him off her and said "you're going to have to stop now, her bus is here". Noone had known what to do when she fell to the ground and was completely oblivious to what was going on, even when we were trying to get her going again.

I'm gutted for the OP but if any good can come of this then anyone reading this thread who doesn't know their BLS should get work to arrange a course or arrange to learn it. And spread the word, it really does save lives.

OK, I understand more now, thanks.

I was speaking to the family last night, and was given a bit more information.
I don't want to ask too many questions (rightly or wrongly) given the 'mess' the family are in right now.

Seems that it took almost 15 minutes for the ambulance to arrive, but rapid response unit was there in about 10 minutes.

However, it would seem that they worked on him for 15minutes getting him jump started.
So all in all, I guess the big fella didn't stand much of a chance.

I don't know if CPR was performed by his wife, and am not going to ask.
Its quite ironic, but there is a woman who is high profile news locally on TV/radio.
Her mother suffered a major heart attack, she gave CPR whilst her 9year old called 999
Her mother survived.

Well.
The big guy had the life support system turned off on Monday, funeral is tomorrow.
I suppose there was no real point in prolonging the inevitable due to the brain issue.

I guess it just goes to show, you never know what's round the corner.
