Ah yeah, it could well have been 38 (or even 39), then.

Did absolutely nothing.

And heard nothing.

It pays to remember that in this day and age prosecution has to be cost-effective, and the fine (and costs) for a few mph over the limit - ignoring the points if you have a clean licence, so wouldn't be too bothered about 3 - wouldn't cover the cost of time providing evidence and the officer(s) in court.

Your friends should have waited for the court summons (if it ever arrived).
It would still have been more or less the same cost if they had pleaded guilty (by letter).

However, if said summons never arrived .......................
They can afford to let it go to court because you pay for it. As ive said, I paid a £500 fine and got 3 points and wasn't even there at court. Some magistrate took 5mins to look at a bit of paper with my name on it that said I had done 34 in a 30 zone and sent me the bill.

Apart from the 4 mph over the speed limit, all I had done wrong was make an appointment after the set period your given for a driver awareness course but they made the appointment for me.

Easy for me to say but £500 seems a lot. The problem I find is that if you aren't in court and/or don't dispute anything said then you simply get steamrollered. It's like not fighting back when someone's punching the hell out of you.

I've only had the misfortune to be in court twice.
First time as a learner driver (driving without dc&a), stood there, said sorry and was given a very small fine and no points.
Second time (non-motoring) CPS wanted £250 costs, claiming it was because I'd pleaded Not Guilty. I countered with the fact that it was my right to do so (and the case took a couple of hours, even the beaks were out for 40mins or more, so there was obviously merit in my case).
Result - £50 in costs.
And I had the 2 police officers involved along for an outing as well, so far more than £50 that lot cost.

It's not everyone's cup of tea but face them down, don't give an inch.
Anyone remember the thread about the NIP for a non-standard exhaust?
Preliminary court hearing, Magistrate's Court trial scheduled and when the op failed to submit and roll over they er..... dropped the case.

I hear what you're saying but after seeking advice I was told not to bother fighting it. I was simply told that if I took it further I would only end up with more costs.

£500 + 3 points + higher insurance for 5 years for going 34 in a 30 zone.

Also, bare in mind that if you were doing 40mph on your speedo it would 'probably' be circa 35mph anyway. Your speedo will over read, so if you were cruising through at 35/36 on your speedo you should be fine anyway. That's why I keep my sat nav on when I'm on the motorway, surprising how much faster you can slip by the police when everyone is shi88ing themselves when the police are doing 65mph on the motorway.

Yes, I've been doing that as well past static cameras. I know the car speedos are out but I'm not sure how accurate GPS speeds are though?

If you want to know how accurate your GPS speeds are, go through a static camera in a 30 zone. Do it at about 60 and some nice people will send you a letter telling you your accurate speed. The down side is, although it's a good service, it's a bit expensive, but IMO well worth it to see how good your gps/speedo is.

Just a heads up. I didn't get anything through the post so looks like I'm in the clear.
Looks like mid beds police are still using the normal guns (either that or I'm wasn't going fast enough)
Better try harder next time haha

You're well in the clear now.

Unless the NIP has been held up in the post under exceptional circumstances. But that's highly unlikely, what being over 3 weeks on.
