I couldn't believe it either when I heard the news a true British comedy legend. I grew up with the Young Ones and The New Statesman and Blackadder were simply comic masterpieces and then of course Bottom. He will be very sadly missed by a certain generation.

The New Statesman really should be reshown on TV.

Thank you Rick (and Ade) for all the funniest memories of my youth. RIP.

When my work colleague broke this news a few hours ago, I immediately responded with a genuine disbelieving "Nooooooooo!" Enough said.

I was 'obsessed' by The Young Ones as a secondary school kid, mainly because of Rik's, er, Rik. I knew pretty much all of the scripts off by heart.

He is (was ) one of those rare comedians that you can't tear yourself away from, when on screen. It's his little nutty nuances, pulled faces, etc. I really dug it... 'got' it. His comedy/character creations were right up my street. Struck a cord.

Genuinely gutted. RIP, fella.

It's weird as last night getting ready to o o bed I had the burglar scene in my head from Bottom, with Nigel from Eastenders as the burglar. When they try to poison him with pigeon pellets in tea.

I think I could put clips of my favourite scenes up all night.

In honour of his acting I'll be taking a whip round for the charity Compashionate Assistance Supporting Homelessness. It's a bit long to fit on a cheque so make them out to the initials...

In true B'stard form!

My fave Bottom was the gas man one. Where the hitting him over the head with the frying pan went on for ages. I'll never forget me and my mate's escalating laughter in unison with the ever accumulating hits. We couldn't breathe. You know: when you're literally helpless and pathetic, for laughing your head off.

From another forum....

He is (was) a friend of a friend and he is distraught having known him over 40 years. Apparently he went out for a run came home and went for a shower and then was found dead on the bathroom floor by his wife. Cause unknown and there will be a post mortem. RIP Rik

I grew up with bottom, had it on VHS lol, know most of the words,

If I had to pick, I love the camping episode, but the Halloween follows close with the exploding carats and the cattle prod lol

True comedy genius, will be missed.

Really sad news. I think one only has to look to the out-takes to see how well him and Ade got on.

I thought Ade's tribute was perfect

‘There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing.

‘They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him.

‘And now he’s died for real. Without me. Selfish b*****d.’

Thanks for the laughs, Rik.

RIP
