Jim Clark Rally cancelled due to deaths

There was a spectator interviewed on Jeremy Vine yesterday, he was in the group where the fatalities happened, he was knocked to the ground but luckily unhurt.
I might have picked up what he said wrongly (broad Glaswegian) but I was sure he said the marshalls moved them to the spot where the accident happened?
Maybe I'll have a listen again on the bbc iplayer.

Just got it on the grass , and it hit the concrete gully which flipped me over , car might be fixable , needs quarters and a roof , just need to weigh up the cost of fixing it or re-shelling it , will be back on the next epynts in a couple of months.
Me an co driver ok , bit sore yesterday , which is suprising seeing as I wear a hans device , recently changed the tethers on it to sliding ones and noticed they were longer than the ones I took off , obviously too long which has caused my head to move too much so will be going back to the old ones , apart from that we are fine

As mentioned before here's the link to Jeremy Vine where one of the spectators says they were told by the marshalls to move to the spot where they were hit and for a few of them killed. He also says that they wanted to stay on the other side where they thought it would have been safer but was told by the Marshalls to move to the spot or the rally would be canceled . There's also reports from people that were there saying that the safety from previous years was different.
I am just hoping you can listen to this and give these people the benefit of the doubt, there is a horrible story about a son holding his dad as he died.
Start at 8 minutes in.

Sadly the average person's ability to accurately recall events is not good. The police will interview everyone, and they will be be able to build a picture of what happened. Lots of people will have seen a little bit, but not all of it, it doesn't make them qualified to say "well this is why it happened".
Until then, everything, including your friends' accounts, remain conjecture.
But, whatever the outcome, whether it's them standing in a stupid place, the car going off in an unusual manner, whatever, we can expect some change coming. God forbid that we should be allowed to have any risk in our lives. I look forward to seeing my grandchildren grow up in a glass case.

I have been involved in rallying for about 30 years and I disagree with your comments , the only stupidity I see on the stages is when people , who are not true rally fans but watch the odd event are told to stand in a certain area , to move from the obvious places , and then once the safety cars carry on through the stage they move back into the dangerous spots , and the abuse the marshals get from idiots who think they know better is unreal tried marshalling years ago and wanted to punch some ****** as in the vid above , they have my utmost respect.
The organisers and marshals can only do so much , so I don't think it will ever be totally safe , but then walking down the street isn't , watching in a field close to the road and close after a jump is a big no no , a lot of the newer cars such as the DS3 and Twingo's are known not to take jumps nice , they hop and jump about on the back end like a kangaroo on speed , you'd never catch me watching in a spot like that.
I did Epynt on the weekend , and as usual the quality of spectating was very good , but you still get the odd idiot walking up the side of the track , there was a lot of offs up there , me included ,
epynt crash - YouTube
(contains a bit of swearing at the end )
It is very sad what has happened on the Jim Clark , especially now as there is a petition just gone in to get closed road rallying back in England and Wales , its been many years getting to this stage and I can see it going no further after whats happened , and especially with the media jumping on the band wagon , I was listening in disbelief the news reports with there sensational bull crap !

So, you weren't there either, but feel qualified to say that other people who weren't there, but will also have spoken to people who were, are wrong?

The clue as to what I do is in my name.
For your information I've been involved in the sharp end of motorsport for over thirty years.
I have been privy to official statements, photo's and video.

Yes it is , a forward impact which we had with the concrete gully , a hans device is designed for exactly that , I have the side impact wings on my seat so don't rely on the hans device for side impact , I have a sore neck as the new tethers on my hans device are too long
if you watch my video at point of contact with the gully you will see my head go forward

A HANS device wont necessarily stop you from getting a sore neck. It's designed to stop a Basilar skull fracture which only has one outcome.

Hence why it's credited with being one of the most important innovations in the history of Motorsport.

I obviously can't say any more than I already have.
It's all very sad and I hope the press move on and find something else to sensationalise.

Bet that can be an interesting line of work (if interesting is the right word). Do you see many big offs or is it mostly a case of extracting cars from ditches?

This is my fat **** in the blue cap helping to push a McLaren MP4C off the wet grass at Stowe during the Practise for the Blancpain meeting at Silverstone a few weeks ago.
Wet grass and slicks definitely don't mix.

epitomises the expression 'becoming a passenger'.
You've also answered my second question in that post (about whether it was just rallying or track stuff too), cheers.

I've always wanted to get involved in marshalling, a few of my friends do bike events such as super bikes and moto gp etc and its a great way to be part of the sports you love. They also get free tickets and one of the best seats to be close to the action and not to mention being one of the unsung heros of motorsport .
