I have had a Williams 3 and a Clio 172 now I really enjoyed both of them the Williams got allot of attention and I would have another one if I could prices are starting to rise now.
The 172 I got after my classic and thought I was going to miss all the power and I have not yet.

A 172 Phase II that's been sorted (remapped) with flowed/ported head and manifolds and oxygen sensors crimp connected as well as the TB connector (the connectors are shyte, cause all sorts of gutless/torque issues). New Dephaser and cam-timing set PROPERLY (before remap) as most have the cam timing wrong. Then it will see just shy of 200bhp with a good clean power band from 2000rpm to the redline...and a little beyond.
Problem is 1st and 2nd gears are useless as its just all over the place. Good tyres and Trophy suspension would probably help a bit. As well as new steering arms (most now will be knackered unless already replaced).

As a drivers car the best ive driven is a 182 wih bimoth cup packs. The 172 is the same car pretty much but the 182 is just a bit updated with different exhaust, manifold and a few extras so basically looks a bit nicer.
In my personal opinion the later clios just go downhill. The 197/200 do look good (if you add a spoiler to the rear) but in terms of driving its like they have made them easier to drive for a wider audience, and again the same with the new clio RS, which imo are not great, look plain, are not even manual and do not even feel sporty.

Having to do all you've described there, defeats the point though, surely?

Agree with you there Darren, simply not quick enough in a straight line and quite slow to pick up due to the lack of torque.
A hot hatch should not be prey to Mondeo and entry level BMW oil burners in a straight line...

A very very generous dyno There just ins't that much power to be extracted from an f4r on a stock inlet.
Mine was running standard cams, standard cam timing, Oreca 63mm group A exhaust and a JMS inlet which is based on a Jenvey inlet manifold but uses a custom carbon plenum which retains the stock throttle body. 197 cams "were" seen as an upgrade for this inlet until one of the tuners started to play around with cam timing and got similar results with the stock cams.
Mine was running about 190-195bhp, it was road mapped so power was only an estimation.

I'd say yours should be running more power than 195bhp.
Ours has done quite a few dyno runs over the years and been fairly consistent, its been in the current state of tune for about ten years now. Trying to find some of the dyno vids on youtube, but seems to have been lost in time, typical
We've had the car in the family since new I remember driving it when it was stock and it had all sorts of flats spots in the rev range. Doesn't do any of that now, it just goes and goes. Problem with it these days is the handling; its sitting on lowered springs and the original shocks, not a good combination...stiff and bouncy.

Kind of misses the point of a hot hatch - they're not really about straight line speed, they're about having fun! Loved my 200 and it was quick enough down a B road if you kept the engine on the boil.

This is my PH1 172.
Ive owned it for 5 years, spec is ported head with matched inlets.
Supertech valves, catcams 421s and ARP rod bolts.
Car made 192.1 bhp and 160 lbs ft on RS Tunings RR.

Personally I love the clio's. They're the perfect car to drive normally and then have a good blast on track.
Mine admittedly a conversion was running 207bhp (Long trumpet ITB's, Cams, Decatted etc.) on NOS it ran 257bhp. They're definitely fun cars and whilst they are getting on a bit the parts are easy to get and reasonably priced. They're not too bad to work on either.
Just make sure you check the cambelt history, dephaser, power steering whine.
