Neighbours kids keep jumping into my edge putting body sized holes in it. I've spoke to the kids and the neighbours but they still do it when I'm not about. So....
I've now put barbed wire within the hedge in the belief that if they discover it's there it'll be a very steep learning curve for them.
Q. Do I need to display a notice stating that the barbed wire is there and if so does it need to be of a certain size and/or position?

Put a sign up mate, quickly!!!!!!!!
If they hurt themselves the good old British law will more than likely find you in the wrong!!
Good idea but I would certainly tell them by way of a sign or something.

It is on my property so I didn't see it as a problem but the missus thinks otherwise.
I got the idea when I was out driving this morning passing many a farmers field and they were all enclosed with barbed wire. Surely they don't have a sign up saying 'careful, barbed wire perimeter'??

I should be careful cant remember full story but a friend of mine put barbed wire on a fence to keep kids out some little brat kicked his football over and he decided to climb the fence to get his ball back he cut all his stomach open his mother went straight to the police and the police were going to prosicute but i cant remember what happened your best bet is to contact them and see what they say!

I wonder if you can buy "essence of skunk"?
A liberal spraying on the hedge would mean that the kids would pick up the pleasant odour very quickly, and their parents would also be able to enjoy said smell when the kids got home

Bad plan! Even with a sign, you have a duty of care towards trespassers on your property! Should they so much as snag their clothes they can have you.
I tried this at my property - putting barbed wire in the hedge - put signs up and everything, which the little snot-monsters kept tearing down and eventually I had a visit from Plod. Despite the fact that I had photos of the signs being up, I was not allowed barbed wire in my hedge. It's illegal.

Thanks guys, not the answer I wanted really looks like I'll have to remove it.
Sounds like I'll have to let them carry on destroying the hedge.

Not a lawyer, but "Occupiers Liability for Dangerous Premises" legislation may well apply. Even an intruder could support an action against landowners for dangerous premises I gather, and the law has special considerations for the safety of children.

If you have a dog and put a sign up saying (beware dog may bite) you are effectively admitting you have a dangerous dog. You can then be sued by anyone entering onto your land (if bitten) because you have already said your dog bites. So I would think putting barbed wire up could get you into deep trouble because this would cause harm to the involved. You intended this to happen so it is pre meditated. I think you should re think your moves. (Iam not a laywer)

Z,
Christ almighty (and he is, so don't give me any hassle for the language) did I run into some nasty ******* thorn bushes the other day. They made barbed wire look like cotton wool, with razor sharp thorns about 20mm long.
Some of these in yer hedge, far side only, and you're sorted. You can probably just weave in some dead branch type things and say they are a natural defense.

Wild, or "dog" roses,(rosa canis), grow very quickly, can be had cheaply, or for free in the spring, (find "runners" in the country side), produce nice flowers, and nice berries for birds, and also very lots of long, sharp thorns, which I guarantee they won't visit twice!!

There is a particular type of "security" rose that is fast growing and has very dense thorns. They are advertised in papers...I'll look out for the adverts for you.
Failing that, plant loads of blackberry bushes along the perimeter.
