I live about 200yds away from a big motorway police place. I was wondering if it is possible to listen to their radio, as I am facinated to know where they are going when they set off on mass. All sirens and lights blazing. Are scanners legal? are they expensive?

You can listen no problem but don't start transmiting.

Why no go out for a day with them and see what they do for real rather than just listening?

Nathan..

As far as I am aware it's not illegal under the Wireless Telegraphy act to listen to police frequency's as long as you do not act upon the information heard or pass on any third party information.

Also i thought scanners only receive

If you can get an Icom PCR-1000 or PCR-100 you are talking the dogs nuts of PC based scanners.

West Yorkshire use encrypted radios, as is the case with more and more forces each month..... so a scanner would be pointless in those areas, tbh.

Grtr Manchester use "air wave" which is in a test phase, so they would be useless in that area too.

If you can get some sense out of the West Yorkshire encrypted police radios, then you're a better man than me! - and I use one of the bloody things for work!!!

Question

I have seen the programe working on a pc a few years ago at a Comunications company the guy was techie programmer sort of chap and we got chatting about things and so on then he showed me the programme
"he did have someting to do with the encryption someware along the line" so that might help with things.

Why didn't they keep the old Pye cambridge's and westminsters and the Philips sets some good old radios.

At least they might be able to operate them
