Track days with road tyres 1-2mm tread?

Is it ok to run with minimum tread on dry track days? I know lots of tread is bad as the blocks move and generate heat, but do you get less grip as the tread reduces on track?

I think you tyres would have gone 'off' by that stage....

I did a track day at brands a couple of weeks a go, had 3mm all round on my Toyos but once they had dropped to 2mm and under i was getting a lot of understeer.
