Can any of you give me some pointers on a decent Video Card?

Been looking at the NVIDIA 64Mb MX440, seems to be mentioned a fair bit......is it any good?

Don't want to spend too much but want a half decent one......to play Medal of Honour & any of the latest games.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

 

Just make sure its an Nvidia card instead of one of its rivals.

The GeForce 4 has just come out which means you can pick up some bargain priced GeForce3 cards.

And stay away from the geforce 4 MX cards.

These are essentially geforce 2 cards, and are not as good as geforce 3 cards.

Go for a Geforce 3 Ti if your funds will stretch that far, or even better a nice tasty Geforce 4 Ti

Even a Geforce2 Ti shopuld be good for a little while yet

The Radeon 8500 has had some good reviews speed-wise, and allegedly ATI are getting better with their drivers too...

At the end of the day, I have only had good experiences with the nVidia cards... if you're spoiled for choice you could do a lot worse than one of the Geforce series.

Call me stupid but whats the reason for staying away from the Geforce 4 MX cards are they crap?

What about the Geforce 3 TI or whatever it's called.....are they around the £100 mark??

£1,500 for a video card I don't think so some how.

 

I got a LeadTek GeForce 2 Ti for just over £100 at www.overclockers.co.uk.
Has no probs running anything I can throw at it.
At the end of the day you won't go wrong with an nVidia chipset just buy the best you can afford.

 

i am a computer reseller and dont usually bother with such frivolities, but i have just picked up a batch load of Nvidia TNT2 64mb AGP cards, cheap and they do the trick fine on a 600 processor at home!

 

er, I wouldn't recommend a TNT2 as something to play the latest games on (eg. Medal Of Honour). You at least want the feature set of a GeForce 2 or 3 card. eg. if you want to play DOOM III later this year, you'll need at least a GeForce3

 

A Geforce 4 MX is really just a Geforce 2 with a few additional features (memory architecture etc, see article on tomshardware.com for full details).

You really want to look at (in descending order of preference)

Geforce 4 Ti 4600
Geforce 4 Ti 4400
Geforce 3 Titanium 500
Geforce 3
Geforce 3 Titanium 200
Geforce 2 Ti

Whatever you do, just stay away from any MX boards.

Not meaning to be patronising, BUT, if you want to spend over 100 quid on a card and get about 10% ACTUAL performance, not what is professed in pc mag reviews, then cool. I personally think that 30 quid for a decent starting card is a good deal, and i havent foubd a problem with running games like unreal tournament and operation flashpoint (which i found to be particularly intensive). Depends what u like to spend... If your talking serious money, i have in stock 3doxygen silicone graphics cards with 512mb DDR ram onboard, and these are available at a price of £3500 +vat each, if that is what floats your boat
