Question

after the Pod yesterday, do you think my times are 'Pants' also?

i don't think i can drive the car any better or harder!

is this the sort of time i should expect?
or should i get better times?

MY97 Turbo
Magnex Centre+B/Box
K&N induction.
no other mods!

reaction 0.420
60ft 2.317
1/8 et 9.829
1/8 mph 73.71
1/4 et 15.163

Erm, I think they are a bit poor mate..

I have an absolutely standard MY00 and at the Pod on the 28th Jan I did a number of 14.8 runs....not much in it.

My best run was :

reaction 0.832
60ft 2.064
1/8 et 9.511
1/8 mph 73.05
1/4 et 14.833
1/4 mph 91.04

I had some other 14.8's as well, some with better reaction times, some slower. I actually think I can do better than this, as I tended to dump the clutch and let the wheels spin a moment, instead of riding the clutch. However, I was a bit concious of burning the clutch out......

But it is not as easy as it looks, so I think it is a case of go back and try it again. Also, the day I went, it was quite cold, we didn't get on the track until about midday cause it was still frosty.

Phil,

Poor excuse.

My old barge of a 1989 GT4 does average runs of 15.2 and that is with about 215bhp, but quite a bit more weight. Best time is 14.7 but that was with a very aggresive launch control.

I would have thought a 14.8 should be about average for your setup.

There again, it is all down to practise and you do have to be brutal with the car to get quick times.

Cheers

Ian

Phil,
How viciously are you launching off the line?
Don't you have to give it big revs and side step the clutch for the optimum launch? Couldn't/daren't do it myself though!
I'm sure Stef can tell you where you're going wrong!
Be interesting to see what figures you get on the rollers on the 25th?

Cheers

I managed a 13.6 at Crail last summer but that was being very brutal with the clutch!
MY94 UK car, totally standard.
Most of the other runs were in the low 14's

14.8 is a common sort of time so 15.1 is close. it is so very easy to lose 0.3 of a second and that wind really was wild and straight in your face.
corsa's must have a very good drag coeficient
at least you remembered your driving license
unlike me!

Cool

Phil,
from what you have told me it sounds like your clutch was slipping. Having to limit take off revs to 2500-3000rpm was crippling your launch

It's just about impossible to wheel spin a Scoob on a straight dry road with a standard UK clutch.

An uprated clutch would provide neck breaking 5000rpm launches but get ready to replace the gearbox when it goes bang.

Cheers

@ Scoobs Vs Cos, the best I ran was 14.8 & I'm bog standard on the engine front. Let Stef have a couple of runs & he couldn't better that - in fact he was down on my average.

Interestingly, at the "finale" up the strip, Stef would pull 5 yds in the first 50 & then not draw away from me until after 110+

Still kicked cossie butt tho'

Phil!

Why don't you let me launch your car for you? I was watching and it seemed as though you weren't giving it enough revs from the line.

Most people have a technique as I have my own hence the times ive got

Next time give me your keys and I will launch it once for ya and get around 13-13.2 mark.

If I blow your clutch I will buy you a nice new AP one!

Hi Pete
Thought I might find you lurking on this thread....lol!!

Hope to get a few races with you @ Crail this Sunday.Gonna meet up in Dundee like last time (without the snow!!).Me thinks its your turn to put it in Northern Meets forum, see how many turn up this time.
A bit pissed at not getting any timed runs at the last one.Best race was with that red Cossie Escort thats now running 2.1 BAR, he beat me by 1/2 a car length @ the end, nothing in it through the gears.Quite chuffed with that,I've seen that Cossie doing an 11.75sec run!!

See ya Sunday

Dave

Yeah Phil they r a bit slo.

With AP racing clutch on 93/94 WRX last years figures from Crail:
My average 1/4 = 13.2s (slo with 17`s on)
My best 1/4 = 12.8s (with water spray n 15"s)

BTW Col what colours u r mota ?

reaction 0.420 is good.

15's is still respectable.

Only drive it to break it if, you can afford to repair it, have another means of getting home, I used to go to the Pod & North Weald a lot with a mate, had a rule, we would never race each other, that way if 1 broke the other was a tow car.

Phil.
You're simply not launching hard enough that's all. The Scoob has played it's hand once you've launched, so you've got to make the most of it. To give you an idea, my best 60ft time is 1.53secs and overall best 13.2secs, in a car with the same mods as yours. I never dump the clutch, and despite the fact I've gone through a few boxes, only one was actually through wear-and-tear (the rest were faulty from fitting) and this didn't go until 48,000 miles.

Puff.
Ahhh, I remember that day well.
Different cars require different approaches to get the best launch, your's didn't like the method I use to launch mine.

Harj the Super Launcher!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't your best 60ft time 1.8secs?

Stef.

Salsa,
Just to REALLY embarras you, when my car was TOTALLY standard, as in 10psi boost, standard wheels (with crappy Firestone tyres on!), standard exhaust, standard suspension etc (get the picture - it was standard ), I did:

Reaction: 1.052 (could have measured that on a sun-dial )
60ft 2.241
1/8 ET 9.620
1/8 MPH 71.79
1/4 ET 14.835
1/4 MPH 93.450

By the way, mine is a lowly 2wd Cossie.... I think you should get out and practice more
LOL

Phil, Don't worry too much, i don't think there wasn't anyone doing brilliant times. Except simon in his P1 and aero in his GL lookalike (scooby RA).
I daren't say too much untill i have taken my baby on there so i'll save judgement untill then
See you sunday for Donno.
