Question

Hi Guys,

Ok i am looking at buying a Type R, so I am asking your opinions, on the following couple of questions..........
a) Is £17,500 a fair price to pay 4 a 1998 Sti Type R,with 20,000, vvgc,full history, Thatcham 1 ect and Totally Bog Standard .??????????
b) got a quote from insurance co of £834.00 +500 excess Protected.

I have not been looking at prices recently so not sure if they are still holding good.
As regards Insurance i was a little suprised as i figured us oldies would be ok now and the days of being hammered passed with thr cossies, I remember £3500 quoted for a cossie valued at £3500.so maybe it aint to bad !!!

Ive just bought a MY97 Sti 3 Type R in Sonic Blue for £11k (136K Km) with full history and a few mods aswell.

I'd haggle/shop around

Phil.

( Was there an STI 6 in the For sale section for £17995??)

Is it a dealer or private sale.

Thumbs up

Guys try A-Plan insurance (0845 071 1234)
they were the only quote I got under a grand (£850 MY00 type RA). I know one or two other owners with type R's with A-Plan.

The next best insurance quote was from Tesco insurance just over a grand.

Worth a go IMHO and I phoned most of them as know one likes to insure type RA's .

cheers

chrisp

I spent a long time looking for a good deal on a WRX or STI and after shopping around for 3-4 weeks I bought a MY99 S-reg WRX for £12,500 with 25k on the clock. There are some cracking private deals around if you're patient and you haggle.

I've been looking at Type R prices for about 6 months (looking to buy this summer)and currently your looking at about:

98 - 99 V5 £17 - 18K

97 - 98 V4 £15 - 17K

These are private sales that I've kept tabs of, add between 10 - 15% for dealers.

But also bare in mind that the new shape Sti is due soon, which will mean a lot of V4's,V5's and V6's coming over here from japan which will also drive prices down.

Hey cool! Prices must have gone up then. I'm looking to finally get rid of mine soon so if you're interested in a 99 v5 Type R with about 5k of ScoobySport stuff on it, let me know...

Erm 17.5k for a STi ver4?????

Sounds a bit much to me. I had my STi 5 Type R up for sale before xmas for 16.5 and there was reasonable interest (not the clamour you might expect if it was real cheap)... That's for a "nicely" modified one (about 5k on mods but of course you don't get that back) - not too mental...

Quote sounds alright though....

I'd have guessed that 15-15.5k sounds ok for that.

I bought a Ver 4 (late 1997) Sti type RA with 5000 miles on it - otherwise standard for £15,500 back in October. At the same time I looked at a Ver 5 Type R (late 98) which was available at £17,000 (discounted from £17,995). So I reckon you need to get a fair amount off that price. In today's market £15-15,500 is nearer the mark. Fyg Park Lane in Alton have a standard Sti ver 3 (97 P) up at £11,995).

The insurance sounds very good though. I pay loads more.

Rich, These are the prices I've seen in Top Marques and Autotrader, whether they're actually being sold at that price is another matter!

Thanks 4 comments guys.........
Its a dealer price and i needed to chop in another motor so not able to haggle too much,Origional asking price was £18.995 which appears to be the dealer going rate...

As regards Insurance .... Its A Plan...Still waiting 4 my own insurance to make their minds up...but will prob be wayyyy over top
so will prob go with it..Tried loads of Co's and next nearest was a grand (protected) and thats with 9 years no claims and Zero points (god only knows how I ain't got any)

will post if my own insurance Co comes up with the goods (or a miracle).

Tnx and Regards all,
Tim
