Question

Help - my mate has been caught doing 111mph on motorway.

He will have to go to court what do you guys recommend.

He his self-employed and needs his license to cover daily commutes of 150 mile per day

Should he represent himself in court pleading the need of his license otherwise he will be unemployed and lose his business or would the best course of action be to hire a solicitor ?

Please don't turn this into a speed thread I would just like constructive help for my mate.

Are there any internet sites which contain info ?

Cheers
Matt

How did he get caught? Fixed camera, police car, radar gun at side of road? As I know a work colleague got away with 135mph after being caught by an unmarked police car. He argued that the car had initially chased him at 90mph and not made any attempt to make it known they were police. He then claimed he accelerated (was driving a lotus elan) away as he thought some nutter was tailgating him. Worked a treated and court just gave him the standard fine and 3 points for 90mph.

caught by in car stuff (Techie term) followed for a few miles and shown the video footage pictures.

Banged to rights and he has no intention of not pleeding guilty or trying any tricks to get away with it. The copper was far too smug apperently anyway so any tricks at the roadside would have probably landed him with an instant ban.

Cheers for the link.

It was my Partners/Sisters boyfriend (no it wasn;t really me)

He had hired a car for a weekend away as his rsturbo is in the process of being sold and his diesel van isn;t the most luxurious mode of travel.

We all like to use hire car's full potential he was just unlucky.

As for myself I test drove loads of MY98 scoobs about 6 months ago but the insurance was the big hit at aroung 1500 FC I ended up abandoning the good ship scooby and getting a 96 GT4 ST205 with 35k on the clock for the same sort of money as a MY98 but the insurance was half the price with the same performance. Dare I say more with 242 bhp on tap and 4 pot brakes as standard.

I've said too much

Cheers
Matt

If he needs his liscence for his job/living then he should definitely get a solicitor, no sense mucking around with that much at stake.

Pretty much what everyone has said.

Plead guilty, solicitor and proof that business would suffer as a result of any ban.

I did this when I got caught at 114mph (I had a letter from my employer saying I could lose my job), I ended up with 28 days and no points and fine.

A solicitor could be used to advise before the court case on the best approach to take as well.

I hope he gets on okay.

Represent himself,i did this, 108 on camera i got 3 points and £200 fine,it goes for you if you represent yourself, plead insanity with a letter from your employer saying you will lose your job, call the magistrate 'your worship' they love that too, its the correct way of adressing them.A solicitor told me i would definately get banned and he would cost £350 for his services (how little he knew)
Lots of luck.

Strange my insurance company (at the time) actually reduced the premium when the time came.

Something to do with their system taking more notice of points rather than the ban period.

In fact they had to record one point against me to put the ban in the system - then put a note against it saying the point was for admin only!

Since switching (Scoob premium has horrific) many companies won't touch me until the 5 years have elapsed (2.5 to go).

Represent himself, ensure he has sent a letter stating that it would effect his business before he's in court and look sorry for himself.
I got 21 day ban and £250 for 114mph, using the above technique. I assume it was on a motorway. I found most people caught speeding in residential areas were getting a significantly stiffer penanlty.

Search for a book titled "The motorist and the law" or such like. I used the example mitigation letters/speeches in this to represent myself at my tug for 111 on the mway caught by Vascar.

I pleaded that a ban would result in "undue hardship" (think that's the phrase), had no letter from employer (was between jobs) and ate humble pie regarding should know better, etc, etc.

I got a dream result (as I was already holding 3 pts) which was 7 day ban, no points £400 (yikes) + costs. No one I know who's paid for a brief has ever felt that they got value from them.
