Question

My renewal is due at the start of next month and i dont have a tracker fitted so i need to know who is the best to try. I'm 23, 4 years NCD, very North of Scotland with a standard MY99. I'm currently with Privilege but when i tried their website for a rough idea of the cost it said i needed a tracker.

Priv is a direct line coy. My renewal with Direct line is due in March and they have already told me I won't need to add a tracker.
£822 including Scooby Backbox

Bearing in mind they wanted £50 extra for 7 months with the BB, and the new customer price is £725 + tracker, all in all not too bad.

May be cheaper to stick with privilege!!

I've just renewed with Priv without a tracker. Saw loads of threads saying they needed a tracker, but I phoned to check and was ok. Seems to be depending on your postcode - frozen north's ok.

It's all very confusing. I'm with Privilege, and they insisted I had a tracker fitted. When I told them I had seen comments that some people were not being asked to have one fitted, they more or less implied that they were not speaking truthfully! Confirmed to me that all WRXs, MY01 and MY02, must have trackers to obtain theft cover.
Perhaps it's older models that don't need one?

I insured with Privilage today. They implied I ought to get a tracker.

Cost me an extra £200 quid for PE ECU (300+hp declared), wheels, exhaust, BO Valve, front brakes air filter and some other bits and bobs on an import STi. Not bad really.

Frizells haven't specified one for me. Neither did NU, but they were a bit more expensive.

Thanks for all the tips. I just got my renewal and it's £824 and no mention of a tracker . Can't see me getting it any cheaper than that!

Try Bell direct. My renewal with Direct line is 822, Bell direct was 798 (no tracker required).

The biggy for me is that Bell's excess is £250, direct line is £500!!!!

Just had a daft quote of £1028 from Bell's web site. Aged 39, MY02 WRX 5 door, wife as other named driver. Tesco was £650 and Direct Line £800. Out of interest, Schofields quoted £1184.76 with Cornhill.....

Just renewed through American Express and they don't require a tracker.

I enquired about any discounts if I had one fitted, and was told 'You are not required to have one so we wouldn't give you a discount'

Did not need a tracker but got one fitted today anyway. Feel a lot happier having one on the car. Just got the tracker retrieve.

Harry Boy
What postcode are you in? My quote for standard MY02 WRX 4 door is only £590 with Direct Line, fully comp with protected NCD - they have insisted on a tracker though.

To be honest Ive given up on getting a Scoobie simply due to insurance. Minimum I can get is £1,300 24 NCB on a P1 + tracker so in theory the quote may as well be £1,600. Can get a brand spanking new S3 for £675 without tracker. Seems that ins companies are either worried about the amount of scoobies getting knicked or just want to cash in on their success. A shame as I like them but I cant paying through the nose just for the privelege of having one. Maybe for my next car once my ins goes down a bit more.

Just tried Bell Direct and got a quote of £1200. Not very close so i'm sticking with privilege but mods seem to be expensive! (see new thread)

Hi Daphne - Just seen your question. Must get the e-mail notification activated! Between Leeds and Manchester, I'm afraid.... Incidentally, Chris Knott (indusrance brokers) quoted me £590, including a protected NCD. As it's by far my cheapest figure, you might do even better there. They like the idea of a tracker, but didn't specify which one. And, any CAT1 will do - handy if you're buying a Belgian import like me, and you want to 'upgrade' to a Clifford.

Cheers, Harry.

Thumbs up

Harry Boy

Thanks, I'll give them a try. I did read on another thread that they don't accept any mods though and I'm planning putting HID Prodrive lights on my WRX (also Belgian import) on its 600 mile service (still not sure if they'll count as mods though). Will ring them later in the week and post the results.
