Default Unclipped cable under the steering wheel/ drivers foot well??

hi guys Cleaning my Hawkeye wrx last night and I came across a green cable that had been un clipped ?? I decided that it must have just came undone and rejoined the two however as soon as I started her up the engine warning light flashed on , I then pulled them apart again and the light turns off. Any idea what this is for and why its unclipped. Is this normal ??

thanks guys

What colour was the connections?
There is a process for classics that allows you to search for ECU error codes by conecting two cables. But its for classics only, see here:

My new age WRX has the same green connector, if you look on Jollygreenmonsters website it tells you how to read engine fault codes by connecting it temporarily. Just leave it disconnected, that's how it comes from the factory.
