MY00 15000 miles front 4 pot Subaru calipers are starting to show surface tarnishing - probably not helped by using wheel cleaner - I have 1155 and Black Diamond and like my brakes except for the muck and HAVE TO use wheel cleaner every three weeks or so.

I don't want tarty red paint on my calipers. Any suggestion (for when the weather improves) of a suitable black or whatever paint that will keep them looking standard but a bit neater, and will not impair the thermal properties and won't crack?

Any hints on what to do? I am quite happy changing pads, and would probably pain the calipers on the car to make the job quicker and easier.

John, this happened to me. Wheel cleaner has dilute HCl in it and strips of the phosphate coating.
Ensure the calipers are warm not hot, remove wheel, paint on black high temperature paint (can't remember the make, from halfords)
Make sure u stir it thoroughly first or it separates out with a v runny top layer.
Paint the visible caliper and then gently scrape off the SUBARU letters, exposing their white paint.(I used a bit of cardboard)
Dries overnight and then cures once you've really heated it through during braking.
Can use caliper paint but more expensive and lurid colours.
After one year it's still good as new.

Right John, I had the same problem and mine is a silver wagon like yours, I believe. So when I had the Godspeed discs fitted, Ian blasted, undercoated and resprayed the calipers silver and I put the red Airfix model paint on the "Subaru" lettering to finish off. The silver paint has stood up to normal driving and close power washing so no complaints and I believe the paint used was something from Halfords. I will now attempt the uploady thingy!

Fingers crossed.

Jerome

Thanks Jerome. Suits the OZ wheels nicely. Will do this when the weather is *MUCH* better, but probably in original colours as I don't have fancy OZs.

JFB/Jerome. They look v nice. Bet they're a bu99er to keep clean Those Godspeed rear discs - are they ventilated like the standard UK99/00 discs, or solid? And how much, if you don't mind my asking?

Thanks,

Richard.
