Default Passport requirements for jobs

As I start my new job, they have asked for my passport, now I did tell them in the interview (pub lunch) that it has expired, and I am applying for a new one, it only expired 2 weeks ago as well

Now the other job I was offered, they also said they had to see my passport, to prove I am allowed to work in the UK

The MD of my new company said they can now be fined personally quite heavily, and held liable for employing someone who cannot prove they are eligible to work in the UK

Now I know this new company does some work abroad, but has it now become a legal requirement to produce a passport for jobs in the UK

Or is it just much easier to prove if you have a valid passport ?

So what does that mean that my Passport has expired and I start the new job in two weeks

Will I be ok, as I will have my application in, they said (my new employers) to make sure I get a biometric one as it will make things so much easier

Ive just used my out of date Passport for proof of id with no problems,
It still proves who you are etc, they take a copy of the inside front cover(contains the passport number) and the rear page with your mug shot on etc thats all.

Makes a mockery of the age discrimination rules. Someone has the right not to state their age, with some exceptions, but then the employer asks to see your Passport which states date of birth...........

But your young so you won't have thought of that. I'm not
