I'm thinking about getting another subaru again, but this time to use as a drift car/some fun.

I'm looking at the lower end of the market, cheap cheap . What model is best and wont break?

Also what is the easiest way to make them a proper skid machine? I'm asuming a WRX and weld up the front diff or something similar.

Has there been many advances on how to stop or spot when the ends are about to go?

Back in the day is used to have a V5 Type R so i know quite a lot about these cars.

 

buy something RWD if you want to "drift"

 

I would say a Type R again.. They are nice and twitchy

Or get something even more rear end happy like a Mazda RX7

Yeah i know about getting a RWD car thanks, I've had quite a few.

Yes i know an imprezza is 4WD, but its not that hard to make it RWD, i've seen plenty done.

It has to be based on a wrx as they have lsd's at the rear in standard trim.

I was hoping someone with more knowledge than me about these cars would be able to give me some good advice.

Same with what advances have been made to stop these engines going pop.

A type R would be perfect, but i'll be looking around the £2k mark.

 

If you want to drift an Impreza whilst maintaining AWD then you need DCCD.

As recommended im sure a Type R would be the best base car, because its already light (and once the interior is out even lighter obviously)... get a decent adjustable suspension setup and then slowly tune the car to your comfort.

I'm interested in getting a Subaru back again, not another RWD car!

As i've said in my previous posts, i'd like another type R, but they dont come into my budget.

Maybe a scoobynet was the wrong place to ask about subarus.

 

STi version 2 RA - closed deck block, 3.90 plated rear diff, DCCD etc.....

but you'd do well to find one at 2k

The Subaru isn't the best starting point for drifting for two reasons...
- Front power delivery will have to be removed. Extra cost on your low budget.
- Charge temp cooling will be very poor. The top mount IC will be useless as little air will be going through it, yet the engine will be high revving and boosting. Not a scenario that the boxer is best able to deal with - hence why one of the reasons the car in the link uses the Skyline engine.

There's no problem with buying a banger and welding up the front diff, but don't expect the engine to last very long.
If it has to last longer then you'll need a decent budget, which doesn't fit your plans.

If you really want to go drifting then go look at a different type of car.

It wouldnt be a competion car, just something for some fun, i wanted a subaru because i liked my old one so much. Its been 7 years since i had it so i thought there maybe some advances on stopping the engines going pop.

Sti V2 RA would be spot on, but as you said i will stuggly for £2k

As for a front mount, i can easily fit one and do everything i can to keep it cool.

As a few of you have siad maybe a scoob isnt the best idea until i can spend £10k on a car mess about in.
