Lordlucan's "stolen" thread (sorry to hear about that) has made me nervous about leaving the car for 4 weeks whilst I'm on holiday this Christmas...

It'll be garaged, Disklok on the steering wheel, in gear, and CAT 1 alarm engaged - is there anything else really simple that I can do to put my mind at rest? I always used to remove the rotor arm on my old cars, but that's not really an option on the Scoob :-) I'll give Boost's suggestion a go (Sigma alarm super-lock) provided my alarm supports it - it's an aftermarket Sigma fitted to an EU import, should be OK though.

I actually thought of that! Lost my axle stands though...

 

Buy some or use a mates also make sure you store the wheels and studs in a safe location as they are as easy to get on as take off.

 

In a recent thread, somebody suggested hiring a skip and putting it infront of the garage door. Not as daft as it sounds!!

 

 

What about removing the ECU?

Or you could pull a few fuses!

Alternatively, few cables/leads may be quicker. There's loads of ways to disable a car.

Fuses seem a good idea to me. Is it easy to isolate the fuel pump on a Scoob?

Remove the ECU is a simple one, apparently.

I would do a mixture including the skip.

Dont take the wheels off, cos if they do get in they will them smash everything up in frustration.

 

If you really are that worried why not put it in storage for a month.
Should cost you approx. 140gbp for a month.
And they start the car up for you so your battery stays happy.
Saves you turning your car into a Lego kit too

 

If yo do pull wires or fuses, make sure that the alsrm and imobiliser still works as per normal otherwise your insureres may say that it wasnt secure...

Maplins electronics sell a thing that goes in line with the battery. It keeps the car live but will blow a fuse if they turn over the engine.

Also you could put a hidden kill switch in the car. Buy one of those CCTV cameras the pugs into a VCR they are very cheap (Or just a dummy)

Remove the Steering Wheel? I dont know how easy that is.

Does anyone know if the self-storage companies like "Big Yellow" provide a service to store vehicles? The recent issues of useing BBS posts and websites to find cars to nick may make keeping it somewhere else a good idea..

Buy a fifty quid banger and park it in front of the garage door.

Let the tyres down and mess the up bodywork so it looks really ruff.

When you are back, ring the local scrap yard to come and take it away!.

I reckon I'm just paranoid to be honest. I'll have a fiddle with the Sigma and leave it at that. I'm not that confident about pulling wires off all over the place...

Not sure if this will work as I dont own a Scooby yet!! On my old 205 GTi there was a fuel pump relay under the dashboard near the steering wheel. This had a cutoff switch on it for some reason which was automatic. However you could also shut it off by hand, which left no fuel pump mechanism.

Or you could just remove the fuel pump, fuses, or something else not that obvious to a thief.

 

What ever you do DONT TALK ABOUT IT ON THE BSS, there are two crucial facts now for ANYONE who is reading

1) your going away for 4 weeks

2) possible methods of disabling the car are being dicussed

You never know who is reading and also forget how easy it is for anyone with a bit of IT skill to track down your details!!!

Sorry to **** on the bonfire, but its the same principle as those who go round telling everyone what tracking unit they have!
