I usually find that if you leave the stable door open, most of them tend to do a runner

When you speak about 218 bhp, where are these horses measured, at the engine or at the wheels? And then, how many bhp does an average AWD car loose in the drivetrain? Quite a few i presume. So, if it's measured at the engine a beemer with 200 bhp must be quicker than a 218 bhp impreza? (given the same torque and 100% traction that is) Help me out.

A measly 80 HP, Pah!, got my car to loose about 100 BHP and that's on top of the 15 HP lost at the flywheel!

Is this a record, do I win a prize!

PS If a Pug looses 30 HP from 140 at the flywheel, does this mean it's quicker? I don't think so. So what does it all mean?

It's torque you should be worrying about, not BHP.

Mulder aint wrong there, torque is where acceleration comes from.
BHP (at the wheels) is the force required to slow the wheel down at any point in the rev range. Because scoobys have quite a lot of running gear, this slow down process is assisted.

Yep, people often say "gimme loadsa horsies", when really they should say , "gimme loadsa torque". Nothing like planting it in 5th and being shoved right into your seat!!!
