Default Access database shortcut not running the application

Any ideas guys,

Have an access databse(2003) on drive x on my server, several users require to use it,

all i have done is create a shortcut on the database pointig to the database to open it.

It will not open, the pc's have some hdd action as if the appplication will start but nothing.

If I open access 2003 then do file open and open the databse from drive x no problems at all.

Any ideas

Access 2003 with simple database
all clients on XP with sp2
all clients on access 2003

thanks

Jas

I've just tried that on our server and my database opens fine so should be ok for you.

Have the users got any restrictions about running programs from the desktop ?

no restrictions at all

all have full access for the directory its stored on , no policies either linked to that location

with further testing this morning , some times the file will not directly load if you actually click on the mdb file on the server but will ALWAYS work if you go via the file open route.

I am starting to think that the "shortcut" may not be to blame. Is there anything else i should be checking , even something the user has not setup when doing initial creation

thanks again

jas

UPDATE

moved the database to another box and still the same, so its something access related nothing to do with file permisions on the server but to do with multiple people accessing

Does it let one person in ok, but struggles with more ?

Is it a large database on a slow network, could be timing out ?

hi bob,

30mb

not network in any way

the one person rule is spot on , others struggles, database is setup as shared

from looking around there is opinions on splitting it and distributing a front end ?

Splitting is a sensible thing to do but have you filled in the command line options on the shortcut or simply done right click > create shortcut ?

here's a 97 commandline example for something I did a few years ago

"C:\Program Files\microsoft office\office\msaccess.exe" C:\audit\ddqsystem.mdb /wrkgrp "w:\progdata\access\securityfile\systems\systems97 .mdw"

there's 3 parts
1 - MS Access executable
"C:\Program Files\microsoft office\office\msaccess.exe"
2 - database location
C:\audit\ddqsystem.mdb
3 - security file (if you are using one, just leave it out if as it sounds you are not using one)
/wrkgrp "w:\progdata\access\securityfile\systems\systems97 .mdw"
