My wife wants a Lotus Elan SE.

Are they any good?
What do you look out for when buying one.
Is there a bbs for them?
Does anybody know of any for sale.

The one we test drove today was H reg and had 80,000 on the clock.

Any advice much appreciated

Jeremy

The following is lifted from honestjohn site - but basically if you get a good un - they're pretty good. It's half japanese after all.

What's Good
Fine handling front-drive sports car with excellent grip. An instant 'classic' despite KIA lookalike with not quite the same dynamics. Non-turbo Isuzu engine has 130 bhp. Turbos have 165 bhp pre-cat, down to 155 bhp with twin cats when re-launched as S2 in June 1994. Engines and gearboxes tough and reliable. Holds its value well.

What's Bad
Eats front tyres. Promotes heavy wear of front driveshaft joints, bushes and bearings. Fizzy electrics. Hoods leak. Hard driven, underserviced turbos will smoke. Red examples can develop a paint problem

What to Watch Out For
Repaired accident damage. Smoking turbos. Kerbed alloys. Front suspension, hubs and driveshaft wear. Need to see evidence of proper servicing, in particular frequent fully-synthetic oil changes.

Had one from new for four years, only problem was the alarm that had to be replaced.

Have a look at http://www.british-cars.co.uk

Go to Lotus BBS and you will find some information on The Elan.

Servicing quite expensive if you use dealers but others are about that give a better service and cheaper.

All the best for the New Year,

John Catlin
