Question XBox 360 - What do I need to setup on Xmas day?

XBox 360 for eldests Chrissie pressie - just read on another thread that the premium pack doesn't come with a scart lead

Anything else I should know before unwrapping on Christmas morning and finding summit else I don't have

I have...

XBox 360 premium pack
Xbox wireless network adaptor
Live 12 month subscription
Halo2 (his request)

Trying to connect to a normal TV with Scart (believe I need to purchase a cable with scart as it doesn't come with the premium pack)

Am I missing owt?

Apart from a SCART lead, I'd definately get a play and charge kit, otherwise every AA battery in the house will be dead by boxing day...

You might also wanna get a "proper" 360 game to show off its abilites.

Gears Of War is probably the most impressive, graphically speaking but the draback is that its quite short. Loads of good games can be gotten quite cheap now - GAME are doing 2 for £40 on pre-owned stuff, so have a look for GRAW, Oblivion, PGR3, Burnout Revenge, COD2 or 3 - all except Oblivion still have healthy online presence.

If you're feeling over-generous - an HD telly would be good

With my premium pack I didn't get a scart lead but I did get a scart plug (adaptor) that the supplied component cable plugs into.

A proper SCART lead will be better - if you use the adapter its still a composite signal.

Come to think of it, I think I did get an adapter but I doubt it ever made it out of the packaging...

I'll open the box and s what's inside scart wise - I'll look at Gears of War or COD3 tomorrow when I'm passing game.
He's only 15yrs so COD3 might be more suitable agewise? I had read elsewhere that Gears of War can be completed fairly quickly.

Is there a big difference in game and video quality between the XBOX and the 360 games?

I bought one of the Argos £49 xbox and game packs just to get Halo2 and wondered if any of the other games were worth playing on the 360?
Probably use the older xbox myself with Forza and PGR till I get fed up with it.

Proper SCART to SCART is better yes - you'll get the benefit of a full 21 pin connection rather than all the video signals being stuffed down 1 wire.

Difference between XBox & 360? Definately - more so now its been out a year - the biggest being the jump to HD - the games still look great in SD, but the crispness HD gives makes it very worthwhile.

Bit of an expensive way to get Halo - I got 1 off ebay for £4. You can still get the xbox live pack for PGR2 for £25, it includes a 12 month subscription included in the price. TBH, I'd look at getting 360 games, some can be gotten really cheap now - under a tenner on ebay or amazon, or you may want to try and go the region-free asian import route. Shopto.net are usually very good and deliver games a few days before their official launch day.

No console i've ever bought new has come with a scart lead they always give you composite (or RF ffs).
COD3 is the same as any FPS (but looks awesome) Gears Of War is beautiful but short and lacking but there is a tendency for games on the 360 to be quite online orientated.

'Bit of an expensive way to get Halo'

Can't resist a bargain

At least we've a variety of 4 games to use on the 360 - I'll probably pick up COD3 to see what the 360 is capable of.

The old XBox is mine, all mine.....it's a few years since I've had access to any console after the PS2's disappeared to the bedrooms along with my GTR and CMR. At least I can give Forza and PGR a try.

p.s. Santa's also bringing me a Wii that'll end up as a family toy no doubt....bit of a console Christmas this year.

What make is your Tv Kevin? and how old is it?
Don't be too worried, I played Gears of War on a 5 year old JVC widescreen TV at the weekend. It worked without a hitch.
We were also using the Scart adaptor that comes with the Premium pack, and the picture was perfectly fine.
Although may I add that Gears is an 18 rated game
Depends on what games your son likes?
Racing games - PGR3, Test Drive:Unlimited
Fighting games - Fight Night 3, DOA4 (although I don't really like it)
Combat games - Ghost Recon, Gears of War, Rainbow Six:Vegas
Stealth & Sneaking around - Splinter Cell-Double Agent
Sports - Pro Evo Socccer 6 or Fifa 2007

In terms of longevity, look for games that can be played on Live! as it breathes new life into a game.

yea i gree with above premium has all you need scart wise , leads etc .
as for games i play alot of online gaming , but mission based stuff , ghost recon / cod3 are really good , pgr3 is superb { the best driving sim on the 360 so far} happy gaming , he will be well chuffed but it wont be long before he wants to play online ,, lol.
p.s. you might want to get a plug and charge kit for the wireless controller , as the standard batteries dont last long , and this enables you to charge while you play and comes with a rechargable battery pack , so no more expensive duracells .

It's a 6 year old Panasonic w/s - I suspect it would be okay but I'm likely to end up with COD3 I suspect as GOW has an 18 rating.

The 360 boosts old xbox games up to 480p (instead of 480i which is half as much detail) fully anti-aliased if you have an HDTV. Halo2, Forza and Burnout look superb. Not all will work on the 360 but most popular ones do.

been reading some other threads on here and now confused again!

my TV has inputs for scart, svideo and componet (i think thats what its called - 3 video leads and 2 audio) - it also has an optical input for digital audio as does my amp.

am i best using a scart to scart on the tv and optical to link to the amp? or use the componet sockets on the TV?

Best solution, get the advanced scart lead, also has optical out for your audio....

If you have component input in the tv (3 video inputs + 2 audio) then I'd use that instead of scart. The picture quality will likely be much improved, (it is on mine).

No, not if you're just using the cable that came with the premium pack.
