Just changed over to norwich union NEW PAY AS YOU DRIVE.

Ran through all the details on the phone with guy and my max monthly payment will be £29.00

I must admit i only do about 4-5K miles per year
but christ it's still £20 pm cheaper than what i was paying!


If you dont do many miles in your motor i would advise this!

The rac come to you and fit a gps tracker with sat nav.
every month you get a itemised bill showing you what roads you drove on and when (bonus) so when im on holiday i will be able to tell if my car really is in the secured car park!

yes they can but as advised they have no care what speeds you are doing and never pass on any info on your driving habbits!

I can go where i want and when but i only drive the scoob @ weekends, so i am now paying loads less for insurance than i was!

avg pence per mile off peak is 0.3pence and peak avg is only 0.8pence
so even if i decided to travel to scotland for the weekend it's hardly going to break the bank! (weekends and bank hols are all off peak)

 

this might well be ok for sunday/weekend drivers but defenently a false statement/economy for most people out there.

I base my statement upon the fact that this type of insurance still has a base amount based on the induvidual, type of car, postcode etc. plus the miles you will make hence at the end of the day if one shops around another insurer could beat the base price on its own

Done a quote for my mrs and stipulated quite a few less miles than what she would actually do and it worked out about £100 more expensive than the quote we had from a-plan on the pajero (28 year old 7 years ncb and very good post code)

I dont think this will be any good at all until some other insurers jump on the wagon.

I think there are going to be a few problems with this.

Firstly the guy in charge of this venture for Norwich Union stated on Radio 1 that the information regarding your speed would be passed onto the police if they requested it with regard to any accidents, as they are obliged to do if asked to help with enquiries.

Secondly - if you have an accident and they notice that you were speeding at the time then surely they are going to take exception to this? I know they say everything will be rosy and that this doesnt bother them but if they can get out paying your claim i think they may change their mind pretty sharpish.

I know the answer to both of these problems is just dont speed but im just giving my observations.

Right up until you make a claim and it records you as doing 48 in a 40.

 

If their tracking system is as good as RAC Trackstar they'll never be able to locate your car anyway!!!

 

Correct me if I am wrong, but insurance companies will pay out regardless of whether you were speeding at the time of an accident or not.

If it can be proven that you were doing excessive speeds and it turns out to be your fault, this would then be taken into account for future insurance policies and not in any way invalidate the current one.

I dont remember anyone ever saying you'd better not speed or you wont be insured.

 

To a degree that is true. Speed isn't negiligence.

 

just called up myself and its not really "pay as you go".

you have to pay a basic premium each month, for me they quoted £42. on top of that you pay by the mile! based on average driving habits the whole deal came to over 2 grand!

and i'm 26 with 6 yrs ncb driving less than 8000 miles!

 

My basic is £13 but then i do live in devon and have full ncd since i passed my test 11 years ago!

Dont wish to blow this up out of proportion but this is NOT good news chaps! I strongly believe that we are in the golden age as road users and its technology like this that spells the end! If NU prove this is viable as a private company then it gives the green light to the goverment (who I would imagine are watching the progress of this scheme with much interest) to enforce a similar initiative...So make the most of your 300bhp + Impreza's chaps, we're probably the last generation to enjoy relatively unrestricted fun!

Oh and just for the record! As with any insurance company they are in business to make money - I'm sure after a couple of years they'll be downloading your speed data to equate that your a higher risk if you speed!

 

I know there is a long term downside to this but for me and the mileage i do it's perfect.

Plus i'm hoping in the future road tax will be implemented the same way saving me even more money!

I drive a white van all day and so far over the last three years i have done 182'000miles and yet the cost of road tax is the same for my work van as is my scoob??

Does this make sense to you?

 

Did anyone get this fitted as i have just had a quote and mine came in at 150 quid for the year against 262 for normal policy so a good saving.

 

just 60 pounds cheaper than a standard policy

not worth it
