What size tyres should I put on 17" rims to make sure the speedo stays as it should and handling is at its best??

 

Assuming your original wheels were standard (16" on the classic) you could use either 205/45-17 or 215/40-17

Yup, 16s, you suggested two sizes....whats the difference??

 

Both sizes will give pretty well the same overall diameter as your original 205/50-16. The 215 tyre is wider but is lower profile, ie the sidewall is shallower. The 215/40 is probably the most popular choice when switching from 16" to 17" wheels on the classic. They also tend to be more readily available.
