write off claims
a friend has had a fairly heavy bump. I saw the car and said that with any luck it will be written off but he is hoping it gets repaired due to his insurance.
he said that a write off looses all his NCB even when protected , where as a repair just looses him 2 years bonus . is this correct as I thought the whole point of protecting your policy was to allow a few claims before getting the big stick?
it makes me wonder about keeping an older car as they will be written off , for much lighter damage than his fresh motor.

I work in insurance claims. (boo, hiss !)
Any policy I've dealt with doesn't differentiate based on claim value when it comes to Prot NCD. Your mate should have a good look at his policy schedule.

Yep, I agree with Matt.
He should be able to have 2 claims before being taken off Prot NCD, regardless of the claim value or whether the car is written off.
(If there was such a policy term then somebody with a £5000 repair claim for a new BMW would lose less NCD than a guy whose 1984 Escort worth all of £300 was written off due to a smack on the bumper !).

thanks
that is what I thought. perhaps it is just his elephant policy? .
it gives me something to check when I renew , probably with liv vic . does anyone know their policy under write off circumstances?.

gave him a call , I think he was still a bit shaken when we had last spoken as things are not as bad.
it seems the ins co had not noted his protected part when he first spoke to them , so the NCD is safe regardless. had he not been protected , he would have lost 2 years.
as for loosing the whole lot , it is the rest of the years premium that he looses and if it's a write off he is concerned about looking for a new policy on the next car as he has a total loss against him, even with his 7 year NCD.

If you have protected NCD, then you're ok for two claims, in which we can't recover the costs from a third party - be it a fault claim, or a theft, hit and run whatever, in a rolling five year period.
On the third claim, you lose your NCD.
This is the same whether your cars a total loss or not.
