My wife is after (sorry, let me rephrase that), I am about to buy my wife a 1997/98 model year SLK (that what she wants).

There were a few problems with the auto electronic gear selection, but are there any major issues I should look for?

I don't remember if there were any factory recalls.

Been to look at a few 40,000 - 50,000 mile cars (silver + black trim) and FSH.

The engine that sounds like a Dyson sucking up marbles is a start, go for a 320 !

 

Actually these are very solid cars with the underpinnings from the 202 model c-class. The gearbox problems aren't that common on these cars, and TBH, there isn't a great deal to worry about on them if you have a FSH on it already and get a Merc specialist to look after it.

 

WE HAVE A 2003 MODEL 230.had for a year nothing has went wrong.they usually have a sedate life.i like cruising about then flooring it,it jumps down two gears and then flys.the folding roof is a masterpiece seemingly mercedes tested the roof 10000 times and it shows.how many peugeots etc have roof problems, a lot.also no water leaks.0-60 7.2 excellant grip away from lights.raced a friend in his chipped fabia vrs from 50mph level until 130 then merc powered away.as someone says engine note not that great but the 320 you pay extra at the pumps plus you can always uprate the supercharger.surprised many a boy racer.i like it.l
