no sound when i play a dvd with windows media player, everything else seems fine ?

Have you checked that you have muted anything in the sound control panel?

sound card problem drivers?

go to device driver
right click computer icon and click on properties

hardware tab,
click on device manager

have a look at whats with a red cross or exclamation mark, (update drivers)

only guessing

Plug in some headphones as it's always worth checking that the actual speakers are not at fault....

Does a CD play in the drive OK and Can you hear the audio from it?

If it does then I suspect you need to download an AC3 codec or something similar to decode the DVD's audio track.
