I have the same problem at the moment. It is a leaking oil gasket - the oil is hitting something hot, probably the exhaust - hence smoke.

I have not had time to get it sorted out - I am just driving relatively sedately and keeping an eye on the Oil level. It hasn't smoked in a while now, but i'm getting it done in a week or two.

I think that it is about 3 hours to do the job but parts are not too expensive (I think).

I have recently noticed the smell of burning oil coming from my scoob when driving along, when I popped the bonnet there seemed to be smoke coming up from the drivers side between the air filter and turbo sort of area, theres not masses of smoke but its dripping from somewhere has anyone any ideas of any common places to look before I take it to the garage.

I had the same problem, it was the valves cover oil gasket.
it's easy to fix and shouldn't be expensive.
it is normal for a 93 car to have it's gaskets dry.

I've got the same problem on my 95 UK car.
Looks like the oil is coming from the bottom rear corner of the cam cover?and dripping on to the exhaust manifold.
The cars being serviced next week and leak will be sorted then but the dealer won't give an idea of price until he's seen it anyone got any ball park figures of what its going to cost me .

I had a leak from the same place as you, I was advised to have the front crank oil seal checked, this turned out to be correct and I had the oil seal changed. Unfortunately this involves removing the front ancillaries including the timing belt, so its about the same price as a belt change.
Bear in mind its a fire hazard.

 

My 95 WRX had the same problem smell of oil burning on the drivers side, asked the local dealer for a price £100 (ball park) then O WRX cannot work on it. But thay sold me the gaskets to diy it £18 and about 2 hours working blind (as the mechanic would not talk to me,more than me jobs worth)easy diy job in the end
