back to basics

1. buy an underpowered car (one that you have to floor)
2. no ABS is allowed, nor 4 wheel drive
3. drive it like you stole it
4. dont get mummy and daddy to foot the bill when you've totalled it!!

Strange post :freak3: , but maybe good advice. I'd add that getting a rubbish small-engined light rwd car is great too; run it on £15 tyres and have a blast.

However, it's not like it was when I were a lad now; there's not really much out there to fit the bill (my first car was a 1.2 datsun sunny, in green and rust colour - great for roundabouts etc.).

Front wheel drive may also prepare you more for 4wd cars anyway.

Well i dont know about you lot but ive owned 1.4's, 1.7's, 1.8's and 2ltr cars, so why do i have to go back to basics? :confused:
Out of those cars, only the GTi-6's (2) and both the scoobs had ABS, all the others didnt (as at the time it wasnt widely fitted to most cars) and even now, my 306 doesnt have ABS, yet my scoob does (but i find its hard to get it to active).
Also why should i drive it like i stole it? there isnt much point in doing that on our roads, your just going to be done for dangerous driving and face a nice long ban (plus points) and probably kill someone in the process.

Ahhhh....so that would be the 1100 Ford Escort Estate (Popular no less) loaded to the gunnels with tools and equipment. Superb 155 (I think) tyres. Now THAT is what understeer is about. Every corner. And I drove it like I stole it. Nearly 20 years ago (oh sh1t). Now I have the money for a Scoob. Oh and I didn't total it - heavy frontal once but not totaled.


In other words, been there, done it, got the T-shirt. So feck off :D

Personaly I don't think there is a standard road car I would not floor.

well i prefer the brakes on my old nova to the scoobs abs, never have i been so scared as when the abs cuts in !!

im only 22,had a 1.2 corsa then bought a 95 wrx,i've spun it n broke a few bits n just blew the engine(waitin on a new one) so obv i floor it,i do drive it like its stolen (sometimes when approprate) but mummy and daddy aint footing the bill,ive worked hard and done operational tours in N.Ireland,Bosnia and most recently Iraq to pay for mine,bet you dont even have a scooby,you're just jealous really aint you?

I have to agree with the original poster.

Not knocking anyone in particular, but there are far too many posts along the lines of

"is this oversteer?"
"Is this understeer?"
"Why when I floored it on a wet greasy roundabout did I crash?"
"What is a limited slip diff and how does it affect my handling"

And various other questions that permiate across scoobynet (not just in here) that, if you don't know the answer to, is really quite worrying.


Sure, the original post was a bit condescending, but its far from wrong.

It scares me too that some people out there are driving 200+ bhp cars and simply don't either understand the concept of or have the ability to deal with fairly basic vehicle dynamic characteristics.

I'm 18 drive a sh1t mini, can bearly drive myself just wanted to pi55 off you nice subaru owners. I am a complete tw4t and should never have posted.

For the record, I steal under powered cars and total them then ask mummy to pay my court fees....hence the original comments.

I drive an 1.8 diesel escort van and thrash the rocks of it at any opportunity and its bluudy good fun albeit on the slow side but it still tests your skills on the bends.But when I take the scooby out its a different ball game,the driver is the one that draws the line and if your not careful when it lets go it will let go big time,so its best to drive within your own capabilities and not to some one elses who may or may not be that good.My brother has scooby and there was no way on this earth can I keep up with him on the twisties and I suspect there isnt many who could,he,s an all or nothing type driver.

Yeah lets all go out and buy ****e cars, drive them like idiots and kill ourselves and any pedestrians that happen to be in the wrong place when our 15 quid tyres explode.

I also wish I was born with all the knowledge there was to know about LSD's, understeer, oversteer, left foot braking, heel toeing, controlling power slides etc, but alas, I wasnt as lucky as the wally who posted this up and once in a while I have to ask and learn from people who know. Lets just shut Scoobynet down now because we all really know everything there is to know about our cars, tuning them, driving them etc so this BB must be a waste of time :Whatever_

I started my driving with a very slow old Mini. 72 mph flat out.

I drove it as fast as I could when no one else was around and learned a lot. Of course I got it wrong sometimes but never hurt myself or anyone else.
If I had been driving the car I have now, I would probably have been injured or killed.
I also learned about handling mods. Fly-off hydraulic handbrake, suspension geometry modifications, adjustable brake bias, etc were all done and lessons learned. Unfortunately (perhaps) such things are more difficult to do with a modern car.

Yea-i remember when the 2.8 Capri was a fun car-slow by todays std's-but a monster back then.
I made do with a 1.6 Mk2 -taught me a thing or two about handling,even used to be able to fling it around the bends and pull away from my friends XR3i--oh, those were the days......................

As I am a new Impreza owner this thread is quiet enlightening.
I am having issues with stepping out in the wet round corners at the mo!
And looking for advice on getting my 1997 2000 Turbo Saloon to handle better.
Trying to work out if its better to spend my money on wheels or lowering kit!
Oh, and my first car was a real classic! A mk I Cortina 1.6?
Totaled it B4 I even got my licence,,,LOSER!!! :cry:
But that was a looong time ago.
