well after 5k+ mils and 4 gear boxes it gave up the ghost and broke the ring lands
on 3 pistons on comp test No 2 was down to 75psi . but considering that this was done not as bad but quite bad when it went on rollers at well lane and did
421bhp not bad i supose .. well i finnished off the engine yesterday and up and running at 11pm last night .

i built the new engine with new pistons, bearings, turbo,
used Cometic 1.4mm head gaskets and std Subaru bearings
and CP pistons with new Subaru rings i have lots of other bitts to go on in time .

will up date as i go on ..... chris

It was a std block with a slight overbore iirc.

wrrjones
31 December 2004, 11:10

David

ill post up pics of pistons 3 pistons with ringland failure 1 is realy bad other 2 are just bad
failure was down to too much boost i.e 2bar before 1.5 was fine when i removed the pistons the ringlands on 1 piston just fell out looked like they had been plasma cut lol...chris

Jon.

i like the FMIC seems to work well i have a new one in case .....chris

How come you've got two cables going to the throttle body linkage Chris?

tweenierob
03 January 2005, 13:13
One for anti lag.

Cant believe you went for the Red inlet after all esp after what that kid said at the pod :D

Rob

Alan

it acts like a hand throttle keeping the butterfly open at i.e 2500 rpm so on gear change the buttefly never shuts ie feeding the antilag ..... you want some more pics ???... chris

2bar of boost on the stock rods ?????

Carlos

Dyney
05 January 2005, 23:19
how long were you running 2 bar for?

I've had a few 2 bar spikes!!
I wasn't planning on running that high ;)

wrrjones
06 January 2005, 09:28
Carlos..

the rods arnt the problem and in inspection they were mint no probs at all the pistons wont take any more than 1.5 reliably and any one that exeeds that is looking for trouble ... was running 2.2 bar at one point when the pistons were poorly to see how everything stood up and every thing else was fine ran 2+ bar for 1000 mils maby more but the engine was breathing heavly by this time and i wanted to see how it went as i had spare short motor which was rebuilt with forged internals by me to slot in ...

Dyney

are you on 2.5 usdm sti?..
if so i would be realy carefull with std pistons and make sure you keep the boost down
if not take a look at my pistons ..... chris

yeah they do but i all ready had this one made by Apexi works well enoughand its realy sensitive so easy to make minor adjustments and 1 click off dont have to wind it back in ill get some more pics tomorrow of the set up inside the car as i will be out with the laptop lol as its been out for first run today the set up is tptally different to last one getting det at 0.5 bar lol.... ... chris

Thanks for the warning :)

wrrjones
13 January 2005, 11:07
well been mapping and up to 1.5 bar atm and all going well cant beleve everything is so different on new eng from last build and mapping ,, ie pistons rods 1.4 mm head gaskets way better than the 1.8s i had before and the turbo is totally different injectors wernt that bad going up from 800,s to 900,s but looking good .. but been thinking of putting back to std will see how it goes ...chris

Chris,

What have you used for your fuel pipes? Is it Mocal push on stuff, ala page 239 of the DT motorsport catalogue. JIC to 8mm tails?

Looks good and an interesting alternative to goodridges braided lines and fittings... plus the most appealing thing for me is it's a damm site cheaper!!!!! How you finding it?

Tony.

Think its the same stuff as that Tony, having seen it on chris's car. Its also what pavlo uses from memory. Its even cheaper from Think Automotive.
