Default Aweful MY05 Speakers

Had my MY05 WRX SL for 3 days now and turned the volume up a bit tonite for the first time.

Good God, how bad? The passenger speaker rattles like a tin can with only a little bit of volume and the overall sound is pretty dire.

I knew about the bad sound before buying the car but thought I could live with it.

So, what are the easiest speaker upgrades available.

I am going to fit a AVIC-X1 Sat Nav over christmas and thought I would get the dealer to fit the speakers (going to argue that the originals are not fit for purpose, so I will pay for upgrades if he fits them at the 1000 mile service for free...)

They are known as "bloody awful" in the trade.

Easiest fit? Something slender, like the kenwood dual mag series. Nothing is particularly straightforward due to the slim mounting depth... I'm afraid I run out of knowledge at the MY03 at the moment, but would be interested to know the exact mounting depth for 04/05...

Question

Don't suppose you can remember the speaker sizes for the MY03 can you, there's a set of components on Ebay at a sensible price, but I don't know what size I should be buying

I ended up having door builds for my speakers, but they are 77mm deep.

You will get things like Kenwood dual mags to fit with an MDF baffle, but anything significant may foul on the door card - unless you're happy not being able to open your windows...

The standard front speakers in an 03 WRX are 5.25" with a mounting depth of 38mm. I'd be very suprised if you could find some 'proper' speakers with that depth.

That's a pain, it's a company car so I can't chop panels / trim apart

Check the FAQ thread for how to install Infinitys. You don't have to chop any panels or trim - just add some MDF collars.

I fitted Infinity 6000cs to mine. Just need to make a couple of MDF collars to clear the windows and they fit a dream.

I went to the audio dealers yesteday, he took the trim panel off and measured the speakers at 6" with a clearance of 36mm - did Subaru fit different sizes of speakers to the 2003 MY?

Had infinity component set fitted to my MY01 only needed some collars or something to fit them, did look at trade in for a new model recently and my local fitter said they would transfer across easily enough, cant remember model name though, trawl a few boy racer car mags and get contact numbers for ICE specialists, I did, worked for me.
