Cool My next Car.

The S14a is going at the weekend.
I am upset, but I need to buy a house so need the money for a deposit.
However, depsite being poor and not being able to afford a "nice" car, there are some things i can't do without. Most notably, Rear wheel drive and an LSD.
With this in mind, i have decided on my next project.
I'm getting an Opel Manta.

Before you all start, i know it hasnt got an LSD, but thats nothing a MiG welder wont solve
The plan is to strip it out, Drop it on some VERY hard springs then continue as I have done with the 200(drifty drifty), but with a little more of a cavaliar attitude
Anyone know where I can get one from?

www.manta400.com - used to be a great site with load of beautiful Irish cars, now a bit popupy tho....

I've got a set of front springs if you're interested, Lowered about 1 1/2 inches, rated at 400lb/inch. Had them made specially for a 24v straight 6 Manta I was building years ago that never got finished, they've never been on a car.

Been there and done that mate I've had 2 gte's in the past and they do suffer with rust so they aren't that easy to come by now Welding up the diff will cause some interesting handling characteristics You may well get understeer due to the diff being locked like a go kart in the wet If you do get one drop a 2.0 16valve XE engine in

Opel Manta, great car, very retro style.

My mate had one for a few months, he got it on the cheap when he worked at Vauxhall. Those classic brown Recaro seats they have...... excellent!
Had some good fun in it with the rear wheel drive.

He had to get rid of it, as being 6'8 in height, you can imagine what he looked like in it........never mind how uncomfortable he must have been.

Hope you get one and good luck with it, get some pics posted once you get one.

I had a GTE, never really got on with it, the 1.8 engine was nicer, the 2.0o is a big heavy wheezy old lump so you need to get the conversion done, I found mine understeered and rarely had enough power to put the back out unless at low speed in the wet, the brakes were crap unvented disks that used to fade even after new pads, shoes and fluid.

So dont think for a ouple of hundred quid you will get a drift monster, they just arent, my money would be on a Supra or similar.

When you mention the Mig welder, do you mean you will weld the diff up ? er thats not a very good idea, I hope you wouldnt try to use it on the road like that !

In short, not a bad old thing but they need quite a lot of work to get them sorted, oh and they rust like **** as well so be careful, preferably buy one that somebody has spent wads on so you dont have to.

The do however still look good !

p.s. look out for perished fuel lines, every GM car of that era suffered...

Mine suffered from that too It did a quarter of a tank of fuel in quarter of a mile Luckily it broke down next to an RAC man on his dinner break Lucky for me not lucky for him
