In one word- SLOW. Not a GTI IMHO. Nice car to cruise around in, mway etc but not a fast car by any means. Back in the dark days of Mondeo ownership I used to have a 'play' with one of these on a regular basis. In a straight line a 2.0 Mondeo was faster. Think the guy who owned it was a little peeved by the fact the Mondeo seemed to be able to corner faster as well.

Pastor thanks for the comments, but the guy is not really a 'speed-nut' like us. He just wants a reliable car that looks okish. What he has basicaly asked me is 'is the car that I have mentioned above good value for money or should I avoid it and look elsewhere?".

thanks guys

Mate, personally I'd stay away from one of those...
Is this the 115bhp model? If so it's a bit too slow for a GTi...
The 150 bhp 1.8 T only just has enough power for the weight...

I've seen 99 1.8T's for around the same money (£500 or so more) and they come with nice Recaros and most of the toys you want as well as having enough power not to be embarrassed at the lights by diesel vans.
Wouldn't get one of these at all, a GTTDI 110 would be a better bet.

As far as I was aware the 2 Litre Mk4 GTi was an 8 Valve?

If he's after any sort of driving pleasure from his motor tell him to go for a similar age/spec 1.8 Focus, it'll be cheaper and just as reliable.

If he's after either 'Car as Appliance' or, 'Car as Status Symbol', then the Golf's for him

VWs as we all no are solid motors so dont be put off by the high milleage because these things just go on forever.......assuming its been looked after.

Saying that the milleage does seem a tad high, but then again for the price and obvioulsy the extras fitted does seem a good deal.

Check parkers/glass online and see what price its worth.
Maybe get an AA inspection if worried and get a test drive.

I think you have figured these cars are slow, but the worst thing is the fuel economy, they do 20's most of the time and into the 30's on a run - anything but that model is better - TDI 110 - 115 - 130 or of course the 1.8T

Has he tried a Skoda Octavia 1.8T - i imagine a nice elegance could be bought for that money ?!?! Or the 2.0 Fabia is quite an unexpected suprise, although thats how i know about the fuel econamy - i ran a 2.0 for a bit and it really did like it's juice !

Yep theyre 8v not 16v. 115bhp and slooow! Handling isnt really sporty at all.

On the plus side its a Golf GTi so good on image, nice looking, nice interior and hold their value well!
