Default What 2nd Cheap + Fun Car to buy? Under £1000

hi,

At the moment i've got a my95uk impreza turbo, but due to running costs etc, i'm thinking of getting myself a cheap run around. I want something thats going to be cheap to buy/run, but also be a bit of fun to drive, plus maybe throw around a track here and there.

I've been thinking along the lines of the old faithful pug 205 gti?

Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers brent

Golf Mk2 Gti, Pug 106 Gti/Ralley, or 205 as you suggest or 309 even cheaper and better handling, so I've heard! maybe eunos roadster (mx-5) rwd!

mk1 mr2
rear wheel drive.
very entertaining handling
lovely 'revvy' 16v engine.
nice 80's looks if you like that sort of thing.
tidy ones can be had for as little as 1-2k
cheap insurance too!
lots of after market add ons if thats your thing.

all that and they are very reliable! just watch out for leaky T-bars though and the normal rusty rear arches.

mx5 like wadsy69 suggested are pretty good too although they are little more expensive to initially buy.

A nice saxo VTR 90 bhp. Not particually fast, but cheap to run and insure, more reliable than the ageing 205, cheaper to buy and run than the 106 equivalent, supurb handling 33 mpg average (driving enthusiasticly) and if you buy a P/R reg they would have lost most of the money already so you won't loose out over a year lets say -

Bare in mind it is French, and like the others poor build quality, shocking dealers and lots of thrashed ones !!

Both the 325i and the mr2 can be found for under £1000. Both may need some cosmetic attention and have quite high mileages but you could find a basically sound car for that budget.

Others:
Suzuki Swift Gti
Diahatsu Charade GTti (sp?) although these may be harder to find?
Ibiza Gti Cupra Sport
Legacy Turbo (although higher running and maintenance costs)
Clio 16v

I's still go for a MkII Golf GTi 8v though (glad I picked one over a pug )

I can help with the Charade GTti, I run the owners club. Bought one for the same reasons and its more fun than the Impreza and can be tuned easilly to be quicker too. Now own 3 of them and the Scoob.

Just to add to the list, Sunny Gti - cracking two litre motor but it will still do reasonable mpg if required. Under rated motors imho, I'd still have mine if another car hadn't tempted me.

What about a Pug 205 1.8 Turbo Diesel. Can be had for around 1K. The most desirable one being the STDT model. Looks like a GTi due to the body kit. By the way how does one go on about insurance for a second car? Currently with L&V. Currently looking at doing the same, keeping my MY03 STi for night times and weekends but using a cheap Diesel for work and back (40 Miles a day).

Vx Chevette? only 1.3 but small, light and RWD!

Nissan Silvia, 1.8 turbo RWD around £600.

They're the ones I'm looking for!

Just paid 2900 for a Rover 200 BRM, minter with lots of money spent on replacement and tuning parts, its good fun, quicker than a lot of the really old tackle mentioned and does 35 mpg, ditto the Vi which is similar but without a few bits, same engine etc.

Go for a 205 1.9 GTi!! It wont disappoint, just try and find a good example (not many about tho I admit) Try and get a phase2 model (1991 or later).

Classic insurance is dirt cheap, handling is fantastic, feels much faster than it is due razor sharp throttle response and theyre cheap to fix when they do go wrong. And if you get a good one you'll be able to use it for a year and sell it and get your money back!

PETER BUDGEN - you have PM

LMRNAV2 - you have PM

PETEM95 - i would like a 1.9gti, but the insurance is a big steep, what do you mean by classic insurance being dead cheap?

cheers
