VF22 in a UK car

Hi all
Anyone out there using a VF22 turbo in their UK car?
What did you think of the upgrade and what else have you had done to your car in conjuction with it?
I'd like to go down this route with other mods and would appreciate your opinion on the worthiness of doing this.

Hi Adam,
Well it was a very expensive modification to be honest.
The pipe itself was about A$400 , but the extra cost is the installation.
The inlet manifold has to come off and all the other associated equipment/pipework etc.
So that was another A$300+ for the labour.
Apparently there is a way of taking replacing the pipe without the manifold being removed but not recommended by the mechanic I used.
Performance gain difficult to gauge - It is bigger and smoother so air flow should be improved- I would'nt like to quantify it though.
All Sti's have the enlarged pipe though - but they are really expensive.

VF22 ordered yesterday from Diesel Distributors - New Zealand .
Arrived this morning !
Installed this afternoon!!
Magic !
AND what lag?

Every scooby should have one .

Just to let you know that stis dont have the enlarged inlet pipe you talk about.

last time I lokoed the 22B was an sti and it doesnt have the pipe. To my knowledge, sti sell a version of the pipe for around 1800aud but I was planning to build my own one using samco hosing and an oil catch tank to handle the breathers. just wanted to know if you had seen a difference, but it doesn't look like it.

I too am installing a vf22 this week.
To date an in chronological order the following mods have been implemented:
K&N Air Filter
Removal of resonator box
BPM twin dump exhaust
BPM Enlarged Air inlet pipe
Link ecu
IC water spray
Vf22 - this week
FMIC - Before the oz summer

Rob, can I ask what you thought of the BPM enlarge air inlet pipe.

I am very interested in this mod, and would like to know if you saw substantial gains.

How is the car`s performance with the VF22 fitted?
Have you had it mapped yet to take it in to account along with the other mods?

See the enlarged inlet pipe? Is it much of a difference compared to standard? It doesn't look like there is much more room to have a larger one fitted. My car is a MY99 if it helps.

I have recently installed a VF22 on a US MY02 WRX. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the bug-eyed one. Anyways, here are the results.

<B>Stock:</B> 14.5@90mph
<B>VF22, 80mm catless downpipe, 80mm exhaust:</B> 13.3@103mph

Both runs were made @ 15psi. No re-mapping done (yet) after the VF22 was installed.

Alan,
Mine is a MY99 too.
This vf22 is awesome.
I thought the Link was abit special , but this turbo has once again transformed the car to the next level.
Yes I have modified my map by increasing the fuel to accomodate the extra air.
I'm still running 1.3 bar boost though and 35 degrees advance .
Knock link is still quite and %Co &gt; 7.0
and have detected no knocks on hand controller to date .
But I do not generally exceed 7000rpm
and I'm using 98 octane fuel.
Inlet pipe the jury is still out on that one -an expensive modification for a minor return in my opinion.It is bigger , maybe 20% in dia .But remember its the bore area that is important.It also is much smoother so flow resistance is reduced-I suppose it all helps.

Alan, I wouldn't run a Standard VF22, you need to get a hybrid one. I run one that is a hybid, along with a link ecu.

Thats all you would need to run it. On the safety side, I also run water injection/spray, octane booster.

Curiosity is getting the better of me now.
Apologies for all the following questions, but why do I need a hybrid?
What results would I expect between the VF22 and the hybrid?
Would the VF22 be too big? What sort of hybrid should I go for? and who can supply them?

I'm willing to learn so feed me with your knowledge.

Did you get a similar launch from the line to allow a comparison to be made?
Was the weather similar?

I saw the scanned time slips for his run. His 60 foot time was a .1 seconds better. He launched harder, but not enough to make up 1.1 second in the 1/4. This also does not say that the new turbo did not help him launch when combined with his big free flowing exhaust. I bet he hits boost pretty quick coming off the tree.

why not put a VF28 in? it has a faster spool up! and I have one for sale if u are interested!

With mods I have planned, I thought it would be a good idea going for the VF22.
Why are you selling the VF28? Is it `cause you're going for the next step up or what?
How much you looking for the VF28?

Alan, yes a standard VF22 would be too laggy to drive. I found that a standard VF23 was bad enough! With the hybrid it is bolted to a smaller turbo, so that it spins up quicker, then flows like a VF22.

so are you trying to say that your hybrid VF22, spools up better than a vf23 but yet flow more air than the vf22 ?

so when are you getting your full boost in 4th gear for example ? just for the sake of comparison, as i am interested in what you are saying. with the VF23 and Link i get full boost 1.2 bar at around 3600rpm in forth.

Imprezer/Nathan.
The times you've posted are similar to what is achievable in an 'old' Scoob, WITHOUT a large turbo.
A stock MY98 will do the 1/4 in around 14secs @ 92mph.
With just an exhaust and filter this can be reduced to 13.2secs @ 100mph.
I'd be interested to see what the addition of a large turbo would then do.
Maybe I should get one???
What were the 60ft times?

ps&gt; I though the only diff between the VF22 and the VF23 is that the VF23 fits the uk car with less mods.
