Does anyone know how easy it would be to drop a Mk II (ie 2001 on) Impreza STi engine & gearbox into a Mk I (up to 2000) Impreza.

Benefits : 6 speed box, variable valve timing, and STi spec internals into my 1999MY UK spec car whilst still retaining lower weight and better looks.

Thumbs up

hi,

the MkII STi 6-speed gearbox does fit in an MkI, it's already being done in quite a few impreza turbos here in taiwan. A local tuning magazine had an article on this, from the pictures it seems the gearbox is sturdier and sligthly bigger than the original turbo's 5-speed, It's mostly a remove and drop in job, taking about 5 to 6 hours.

hi,

forgot to mention that the transmission shaft will also need replacing since the new one is shorter by about 6cm or so.
