Red face

Perhaps my STi 6 is just allergic to Grantham North services on the A1 but on Friday night after stopping there it popped out of 5th gear once a few minutes after getting going northbound on the A1. Then tonight on my way back I stopped there again and after getting going southbound this time it popped out about 3 times over a period of about 15 minutes. After that it was fine again.

The clutch isn't slipping and it's never happened in 4th (my normal A-road cruising gear) or 3rd (my 30-zone gear).

Eek!

Is it a Type R? - I believe a sizeable number had problems with 5th gear synchro -.... eventually failling completely? - and warranty companies started to say it was a manufacturing defect - try a search on it?

Hopefully its not the syncro though
and the reason some people steered clear of Type R's

It's a 4-door, not a Type R (I'm the sort of wimp who prefers ABS ).

Jumping out of 5th was/a common problem. The 5th gear retaining nut used to work loose allowing things to move.

If caught early enough , replacing the nut, (can be done with box in car) torquing and straking properly usually fixes it.

Lots of threads on this just search, but here's one.........

It was an issue with all MY99/00 gearboxes as they didnt quite know how many had 5th gear torqued up right or not, as said before, in the first couple of years your looking at the nut, after that the wear will be the big issue so you will need a new 5th syncro no doubt

Just had the exact same prob fixed on my STi6 wagon, 5th gear lock nut loose, luckily not too much damage, tightened up and new oil, all is good! As soon as I mentioned jumping out of gear I was told its a common prob for that age of car....
