What are the implications if I install a Japanese StiIII engine in a UK MY94 car?

Effects on the speedometer, ECU and what have you.

The UK car i havetest driven sports OZ rims on wheelnuts that look like bolts! Do you think the rims were machined to fit the hub?

The speedo on an STi version III is mechanical driven from the gearbox. I reckon you would need all ancillaries for the engine, the engine bay wiring loom and the STi ECU to make this work. I can't see it working with the UK spec ECU. You may also need the STi gearbox. Even if you could get it to work with a UK spec gearbox the ratios would be all wrong for the STi engine and how would you drive the speedo?

I reckon you would encounter lots of other problems in the installation of the engine and in seeking to get it up and running properly.

All in all, it sounds to me like a lot of hassle unless you are getting the engine for peanuts with all the necessary bits I wouldn't bother.

Easier to sell your UK spec car and buy an STi!

I have just noticed from your profile that you live in Malaysia. Can I suggest that it might be helpful to mention this when you post on the BBS as it may be relevant to the answer.

In Malysia this sort of engine swap may make more sense because:

(a) I assume you would not be paying anything like fourty pounds an hour for labour;

(b) The engine and other parts should be cheaper as the shipping costs will be much lower;

(c) Malaysian mechanics are probably more familiar with this sort of thing than in the UK. In Thailand, where I travel regularly, there are lots of workshops merrily dropping DOHC VTEC engines imported from Japan into Thai manufactured Civics where VTEC is not an option. They don't seem to have much difficulty with this sort of thing but then used Japanese parts are big business in Thailand and readily available.
